Mumbai, Mar 7: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MahaVitaran) may soon be listed on the stock market, making it the first power distribution company in India to do so.
Speaking in the Maharashtra Assembly during the debate on the Governor’s Address, CM Fadnavis highlighted the state’s ambitious energy reforms, stating that by 2030, nearly 52% of Maharashtra’s electricity will come from renewable sources.

In a major relief for consumers, the government has reduced electricity rates by 17% for those using 100 to 300 units per month, benefiting nearly 95% of households.
Consumers opting for smart meters will receive an additional 10% discount on daytime usage, while prepaid meters remain optional.
Addressing farmers’ concerns, CM Fadnavis assured that the government is working on a plan to clear outstanding electricity dues worth Rs 75,000 cr. Under the 'Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme,' 1.30 lac homes are already receiving free power, with the government providing over Rs 1,000 cr in subsidies. Consumers using up to 300 units will get free electricity, and any surplus generated through solar panels will be bought by the government, making households self-sufficient in energy.
Further boosting renewable energy adoption, the government plans to install solar panels in 20 lac houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, ensuring zero electricity bills for residents. A new state scheme, modeled on the Centre’s initiative, will enable 1.5 cr families consuming up to 100 units per month to install solar panels, making them completely energy-independent.
Highlighting Maharashtra’s development across sectors, CM Fadnavis reaffirmed the state’s leadership in industry, agriculture, infrastructure, and healthcare. He also confirmed that the Rs 86,000 cr Nagpur to Goa Shaktipeeth Expressway will be constructed, enhancing connectivity and boosting the economy of 12 districts, including Marathwada and Konkan. The project has received land acquisition consent in Kolhapur, and an additional 100-km road will be built from Nashik to Vadhavan to improve access to the country’s largest port.
On the irrigation front, the government is set to launch the Nar-Par-Girna river linking project, benefiting thousands of farmers in Nashik and Jalgaon by bringing 49,516 hectares under irrigation. Additionally, the Wainganga-Nalganga river linking project will see the construction of 31 new dams and a 426-km canal, ensuring Vidarbha’s water security and eliminating drought concerns.
CM Fadnavis urged the Opposition to support these initiatives for the state’s progress and reiterated the government’s commitment to delivering effective governance and sustainable development.Bottom of Form
