Divya Spandana applauds Karnataka government's move to support Kannada cinema

Bengaluru, Mar 8: Actress and former Member of Parliament Divya Spandana has praised the Karnataka government’s decision to cap movie ticket prices at Rs 200 across the state, calling it a significant step in reviving the Kannada film industry.

In a post on her X timeline, Divya Spandana shared her support for the initiative, quoting an article from a leading daily. She stated, “Commendable move by the Karnataka Government to help revive the Kannada film industry. In the start of 2025, around 75 films released, but none performed well, partly due to the increasing costs of the movie experience, including ticket prices (up to Rs 1000) and expensive popcorn. Capping the ticket prices at Rs 200 will hopefully bring the Kannada cinema audience back to theatres.”

The actress also expressed her approval of the government’s decision to launch a state-run OTT platform aimed at promoting Kannada films, noting that current OTT platforms often show bias towards other languages and rarely acquire Kannada films. She further praised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s initiative, writing, “OTT platforms are biased towards other languages and do not buy Kannada films, and a state-run government platform is another great step! @siddaramaiah.”

This move by the Karnataka government is part of a series of measures announced during the state budget, aimed at bolstering the Kannada film industry. Among other key decisions, the state granted ‘industry’ status to the Kannada film sector, enabling it to access benefits available to other industries under the Industrial Policy.

In addition to her praise for these initiatives, there is growing speculation within the industry that Divya Spandana may be returning to acting. While she was last seen in a cameo role in Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare, she had previously played the lead in Nagarahavu under director Kodi Ramakrishna. Recent reports suggest that she might be starring in an upcoming film directed by Yogaraj Bhat, though no official confirmation has been made regarding this project.
