Udupi, Mar 9: "Differently-abled individuals are not a burden to society; rather, they possess remarkable talents that, when nurtured with proper encouragement, can lead to extraordinary achievements," stated Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop of Udupi diocese, at the inauguration of the Divyanga Mahotsava (Festival for the differently-abled) organised by the Family Commission of the Udupi diocese at the Anugraha Pastoral Centre in Kakkunje on Sunday, March 9.

Bishop Lobo emphasised that Pope Francis has urged the world to instill mental strength in individuals with physical disabilities. At the diocesan level, efforts have been made to ensure quality education for differently-abled children and to facilitate access to government welfare schemes. The goal is to help them live with dignity and be an integral part of society, he added.

MCC Bank president Anil Lobo noted that, instead of merely showing sympathy, offering opportunities to the differently-abled would allow them to showcase their capabilities. "Their talents often remain untapped due to lack of encouragement and financial constraints. Developing an inclusive mindset and fostering sensitivity is crucial for their progress," he said.

He assured that MCC Bank is committed to supporting their growth in every possible way.

A special moment occurred when differently-abled individuals came together to felicitate bishop Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, marking his 75th birthday and 25 years of service as a bishop.

During the event, all participating differently-abled individuals were honoured with shawls and tokens of appreciation by the bishop and other clergy members.

The celebration was enriched by performances from students of Maanasa Special School and the youth of Thottam Church, who presented energetic dance performances, while Fr Denis D’Sa captivated the audience with soulful singing.

Several dignitaries attended the event, including Esther D’Souza, secretary of the Karnataka Regional Commission for the Differently-Abled; Fr Vincent Crasta, director of Anugraha Pastoral Centre and secretary of the Catholic Education Society, Udupi Diocese; Fr Roshan D’Souza, director of the Family Commission; Sister Vinny, event coordinator; Fr Denis D’Sa, public relations officer of the diocese; Dr Edward Lobo, director of the Health Commission; Fr Cyril Lobo, director of the Bible Commission; and Fr Alwyn, editor of Ujwaad newspaper.

Leslie Aroza, director of the Family Commission, hosted the event, delivering the welcome address and vote of thanks.
