Mumbai, Apr 4: Celebrated actor, director, and producer Manoj Kumar, fondly known as ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his patriotic contributions to Indian cinema, passed away in the early hours of Friday at the age of 87. He breathed his last at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, where he had been undergoing treatment since February 21.
According to medical sources, the legendary actor succumbed to cardiogenic shock triggered by an acute myocardial infarction — a severe heart attack. His health had been further complicated by decompensated liver cirrhosis in recent months.

Dr Santosh Shetty, CEO and executive director of Kokilaben Hospital, confirmed the news in an official statement: “Veteran actor Shri Manoj Kumarji passed away peacefully at around 3:30 am due to age-related health issues. He had been hospitalized for the past few weeks.”
The news of his demise sent shockwaves through the film fraternity and beyond. Tributes poured in from across the country, including from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films. Manoj Ji's works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”
Born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Amritsar, Punjab, Manoj Kumar carved a niche for himself in Hindi cinema with his unique blend of patriotism and storytelling. His roles in films such as Shaheed, Upkar, and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan earned him a place among the most influential actors of the 60s and 70s.
A multifaceted talent, Manoj Kumar also made his mark as a director and producer with critically acclaimed hits like Upkar, Kranti, Clerk, and Purab Aur Paschim. His distinctive brand of cinema not only entertained but also instilled a deep sense of nationalism among audiences.
In his later years, Manoj Kumar ventured into politics and formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after retiring from films.
