Bengaluru: 15 organizations mount pressure for cancellation of SSLC examinations

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, May 26: Several leading personalities including the former chairman of Kannada Development Authority Prof G Siddaramaiah have urged chief minister (CM) B S Yediyurappa, to cancel SSLC examinations this year in the light of grave coronavirus situation in the state compounded by the increasing number of such cases.

A letter containing signatures of eminent leaders of about 15 different organizations in Karnataka was sent to CM Yediyurappa. The letter echoes the fear among the parents about sending their children to SSLC examination centres. They want to know whether conducting SSLC examinations under such circumstances is unavoidable and whether it is that much important. The letter also contains questions like whether holding an examination is proper and if it is pertinent to hold the examination at this juncture. Further, the holding of the SSLC examination is more important than the lives of the students.

Estimated 8.5 lac students will be appearing for this examination and 2 lac staff have been deployed for the purpose. The letter warns that even if one of the staff is infected, coronavirus infection will spread to all others. It has cautioned that subjecting so many children to thermal scanning before appearing for the examination in itself is a challenging job. The dignitaries also warned that there could be a situation in which students suffering from fever may consume medicine and appear for the examination with other children.

Educationist V P Niranjanaradhya noted that those who are directly involved with the examination are bogged down by the fear of getting the infection. The families are worried about what could happen. Officials in the education department also are facing the same tension and pressure. He wanted to know whether the holding of the examination is important.

Many want the chief minister to instruct the education department not to hold the examination as containment zones are located in all the districts except Chamarajanagar. All India Student Federation, Primary Teachers Federation, Karnataka State Retired Education Officers Forum, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene, Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samiti and Karnataka Vidyarthi Sangha are among the organizations that have signed the letter.

Sir, it has been almost 2 months and still this virus is not gone yet and at this type of situation conducting the SSLC exam is very risky for students and teachers even with all the necessary measures still we can't stop this virus spreading. Then would the parents risk their child's life for an exam and nowadays, the marks don't prove the ability of a child whether if the they fail also . Instead of conducting the SSLC exam you can provide them 1st Puc classes
I request chief minister Yediyurappa and the education minister to take a wise decision and pls cancel the exam . As these are students going under mental stress.

I don't understand why prominent groups are against SSLC exams
Are they playing game with youngster feature and life plan
For an example if exams are conducted students can plan next academic as per Thier choice otherwise street boys and highly studied boys will become equal and we don't understand what covid 19 will disturb if people can walk around with safety precautions then why should u fear it's u to take care of yourself once mask is on we don't think it can travel inside human body
And everyone should learn how take challenge s in future something else will come during pu or final year degree will u runaway and hide in home years
That's not soldiers quality every human is soldier for any kind of challenges
My view is in exam hall instead of 3 put 2 in a bench and mask on hands sanitised with social distance of 5 feet I don't think
Coronas father also cannot attack us
Anyway best of luck to all my 10 std students

Instead of spoiling 1 year of the students administration must take a decision
All students to be promoted this year without exam.
So that they can attend for online classes of PUC from July.
When the situation becomes normal then let them attend classes
    Simple Idea
Instead of more and more infection

It's better to cancel the examination. This is life threatening situation and saving the lives is more important than conducting examination. Idea of conducting examination during this pandemic is impractical.

The problem is our ministers are uneducated. For 1 year it is best all children are homeschooled. It is better they lose 1 year of "education", than losing their lives to Corona.

Any examination before an (Undergraduate) Degree course is a completely useless exercise.

    It serves absolutely no purpose.

Worse, it puts unnecessary pressure on very vulnerable young people...

    ...driving some to harm themselves.

It should be the task of the Degree course provider to check eligibility based on some Entrance exam. There are already several entrance exams are in place.

Mangalurean.... Students can answer their degree exams once they reach the age of 40....that time they will be fully matured and become very responsible... Right na? Same time, they can get married.... Side by side... Hand in hand... You should not forget to wait till your girlfriend turns to 40😹😹

Yes it is very rightly mentioned in the above news. Couple of years before there was no board exam in CBSE board. Those children who haven't appeared the board exam are admitted in various boards and universities all over the year. In this dangerous situation SSLC exam is not so important than the health. Now we can hear many police personals got infected. Later on we can hear invigilating teachers and kids are infected and all the students and teachers has to go for quarantine.

Secondly, about English paper of PUC which is only paper left that too it is not so important to have the exam on it. The main papers which are required for the future studies is already finished. The board is safe about PUC exam. I cannot understand still why our education board cannot understand this. Very sad.

Yes. Cancellation of SSLC exams is essential. Most important post coronavirus world should be embraced here on. All education system should be online. Huge college infrastructures are a waste. Let me give a simple example. We used to gp Ideal Ice cream parlour. We used to pay higher bill to cover cost of infrastructure. Now since 2019 we are habituated to order on Zomato, swiggy. Get the desired desert to our doorstep at lower costs and this would save time and money plus provide jobs to delivery boys. Studying online saves on time, provides flexibility in study time and one can study in a homely atmosphere. Campus experience is not suvh a great thing. One can forgo the experience for more gains. Online education will reduce cost if education and will ensure poor will have access to quality education. Teachers can teach from home. This reduces vehicle movement, helps environment to be green and clean.

Health and life is greater than any exam. SSLC students have already written a couple of preparatory examinations. Five or ten percents additional marks could be added to the Average marks of Preparatory exams and Final SSLC Certificates could be issued.
