Mumbai coastal road faces scrutiny over poor patchwork, PMO seeks explanation

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai

Mumbai, Feb 22: The Rs 14,000-cr Mumbai Coastal Road Project is under fresh scrutiny after a viral video exposed substandard patchwork on a key stretch near Haji Ali. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is also considering adding an exit at Nepean Sea Road after persistent demands.

Shiv Sena (UBT) has blamed the previous Eknath Shinde-led government for alleged contractor favoritism, while the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has sought clarification from Maharashtra’s chief secretary following the viral clip.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray criticized the project’s execution, stating that had their government remained in power, the road would have been completed with top quality by 2023, including cycle tracks and parks.

The 10.58-km, six-lane road connecting Marine Drive and Worli has seen over 50 lac vehicles since opening in phases from March 2024. Key features include twin 2-km-long tunnels and multiple interchanges.

With concerns over quality mounting, authorities are now under pressure to ensure better execution and accountability in the ambitious infrastructure project.
