Government to facilitate return of Indians stranded abroad from May 7

New Delhi, May 4 (IANS): With the nationwide lockdown entering its third phase on Monday, there was some good news for Indians stranded abroad as the Centre has announced to facilitate their return on compelling grounds in a phased manner from May 7 on payment basis.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs made the announcement, informing that the travel would be arranged by aircraft and naval ships and a standard operating procedure (SOP) has been prepared in this regard.

Indian Embassies and High Commissions are preparing a list of distressed Indian citizens and the facility would be made available on payment basis, a statement issued by the Home Ministry said.

According to the statement, "Non-scheduled commercial flights would be arranged for air travel and the travel would begin in a phased manner from May 7."

"Medical screening of the passengers would be done before they board the flight and only the asymptomatic passengers would be allowed to travel," it said.

During the journey, all these passengers would have to follow the protocols, such as the health guidelines issued by the Health Ministry and the Civil Aviation Ministry.

"On reaching the destination, everyone would have to register on the Aarogya Setu app. Everyone would be medically screened," the statement said.

After scrutiny, the passengers would be quarantined for 14 days, either in a hospital or in an institution on payment basis by the concerned state government.

The Home Ministry clarified that Covid-19 test would be done after 14 days and further action would be taken according to health protocols.

The detailed information will soon be available on the websites of the Ministries of External Affairs and Civil Aviation.

"The state governments are being advised to make arrangements, including for testing, quarantine and onward movement of the returning Indians to their respective states," the statement said.

Since the announcement of the lockdown from March 24 midnight, all international flights were stopped, leaving Indians in foreign lands stranded.

What is the PM cares fund set for why have they taken all those donations and aids if they can't support these ppl who really need it... Pay for atleast the less fortunate so that they can come back safely... Most of all plz give the public an account of how the money has been used... Keep the public updated on the fund and it's use and balance on at least a fortnightly basis..
For all fellow Indians who are right now fighting over BJP being better than Congress and Modi being a better leader than Singh and vice versa stop it... Support each other at this time of need as human beings and not as ppl divided by party, leaders, govts, religion etc... This virus does not see all this before it attacks and latches on to u... So it means suffering of the expatriate community will continue for one more month without any jobs, salaries, pay cut , food and may be eviction of landlord.

If PM Modi's government can extended the help for Pakistani student in Wuhan, China why the expatriate community that sends $120 billion dollar to the Forex is ignored?

Let's not forget Congress government 1990 airlift of Indians from Kuwait was carried out from August 13, 1990 to October 20, 1990 after the Invasion of Kuwait. Air India helped evacuate 170,000 people by civil airliners. The operation was carried out before the Persian Gulf War in 1990 to evacuate Indian expatriates from Kuwait
Today the crisis is worst than Kuwait invasion but without any battles fought.

Why the Indian consulate which arranged so many programs for PM Modi's visits before the election spending millions are charging fees for every consulate services is not responding?

Ppl sent money to their bank accounts and not to to Govt of India. In 1990 it was neither khangress nor BJP Govt was in power. Check before you comment. Who was the PM at the time of Gulf crisis of 1990? Khangress govt?
Further as per Govt rule if you r air lifted by Govt you have to pay the charges.
Tell me why we the tax payers have to bear the air lifting of Indians stuck in other countries? When they earn they don't give anything to us /Govt why we should bear?
Regarding arranging programmes for PM it is for PM and not for MODI the citizen.
And why every service at Consulate be free? When you earn there you r supposed to pay for the services of Indian Embassy. Why the ordi nary tax paying citizen should bear the cost of embassy for the services provided to the earning citizen?
I know Ur totally frustrated as OUR PM is given important through out world and all Developed Country Heads r listening and implement MODI'S Suggestions

    Dear Rathan,
You are absolutely wrong. NRIs sent money to India which will be added to the foreign currency deposit of the country., INR is transferred to their account. The same is used by the government for international trading. The tax does not mean that only income tax. If the NRI or his family member buy any item there exist tax/ GST which is credited to government. If you see the flight ticket, there is also tax, fuel surcharge, airport development fee etc. These are also added to nation’s development. If the government cannot help the NRIs they must stop visiting the foreign countries and begging for money (in political language investment in the country or for the development of the country). The PM is travelling all over the world with the tax payer’s money which in turn make no advantage for the citizen.

All is well about the stranded people all over the world. What about the silent warriors, our lakhs of seaman are eagerly waiting to come home after a long time of separation from their loved once. Without the seaman the worlds commercial trading cannot be achieved. Has anyone thought about it.

Only BJP government well aware how to airlift stranded people from abroad. Isse kahte hai tajurba..which lacked in previous government. Our Prime Minister kept cordial relationships with one and all countries including samoa island. All countries giving helping hand in modiji call. After independance first time feel we are safe under his leadership.

    You are so very right.

Which makes me to believe that Gulf war (invasion of Kuwait) either never happened or happened after May 2014. Thus previous governments never airlifted people.

    Good worship of dindhora govt.

In 1990 during the Kuwait war, India airlifted nearly 200,000 Indians from Kuwait without charging them a penny. I think all were safely airlifted then, from the war zone. I don't remember who was the PM at that time. Hmmmm.... I am sure PM, whoever in power, has to keep good diplomatic relationship with other countries. That is his job.
