Washington, Feb 23: Tech billionaire Elon Musk reignited discussions over his decision to fire former Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal after an X user shared an old exchange between the two. The post surfaced as Musk, now heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the Trump administration, issued a strict directive to federal employees—either prove their work output or face termination.
"Parag got nothing done. Parag was fired," Musk wrote in response to the post, which highlighted a 2022 conversation where Agrawal tried to discuss Twitter’s internal challenges with Musk before his dismissal.
The resurfaced exchange drew parallels with Musk's current federal workforce policy, which demands employees submit weekly reports detailing their contributions. The X user who posted the conversation noted, “Almost three years ago, Musk asked Parag Agrawal what he got done last week. Now he's asking every federal worker the same question.”
Musk’s latest mandate, backed by US President Donald Trump, is part of a broader effort to restructure federal agencies and cut government spending by USD 2 trillion. Emails with the subject line “What did you do last week?” were sent to employees at agencies like the Securities and Exchange Commission, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation," Musk warned.
The move comes amid legal battles between Musk and Agrawal, who, along with other ex-Twitter executives, is suing Musk for USD 128 million in unpaid severance. The lawsuit claims they were ousted within minutes of Musk’s Twitter takeover in 2022, with false accusations of misconduct.
Musk’s drastic measures continue to spark debates, with supporters hailing his efficiency-driven approach, while critics argue it threatens job security and governance stability.
