Mangaluru, Aug 5: A two-day hands-on workshop on ‘Techniques in Biology’ for pre-university students was organized by the departments of Biological Science sponsored by Star College Scheme, department of Biotechnology, Government of India, on August 2 and 3.
The inauguration of the Workshop was held in Fr Robert Sequeira Hall, LCRI block at 9.30 am on August 2. Dr. Vasudeva Kamath, deputy director, Pre University Education, Dakshina Kannada was the chief guest. The programme started with a prayer song by final year students.
The dignitaries inaugurated the workshop symbolically by lighting the lamp. The chief guest was presented a plant seedling, a bag of Vemicompost and a book ‘Birds and butterflies of the Campus’ as a gesture of solidarity by the principal.
Addressed the gathering, the chief guest presented his views on basic sciences. He insisted that students should develop innovative and inventive qualities, empirical studies and get exposed to community related programmes in interdisciplinary areas which would thereby lead to upgradation of quality education at Pre university level. He also suggested to popularize basic sciences and to start core group in the college where students can concentrate on only academic activities and get enhanced with uniqueness in learning process.
The dignitaries released the soft copy of the protocols of experiments from all the departments of Biological Science. Principal Fr Praveen Martis in his presidential address said that basic sciences are equally important to other fields of education and learning has to be transferred into the society.
Harsha Paul, dean of Biological Science welcomed the gathering. Dr Hemachandra, HOD of Zoology department rendered the vote of thanks. Shameena, faculty of Biochemistry department introduced the chief guest to the gathering. Nishatt Fathima, student of final year BSc (CMZ) compered the programme.
As many as 15 colleges with 148 students participated in the workshop.
