The event is supported by department of Science & Technology of Government of India and State Government through KSCST.
The project 'Production of Ink and Paint Products from Internal Combustion Engine Exhaust Soot' by Mohd Arzoo, Mohd Zakariya, Rifad Pallikkandi and
Aswanth M V was guided by Rumana Ali, assistant professor of the department of Mechatronics Engineering.
Congratulating the team, chairman of Rajalaxmi Education Trust, Rajesh Chouta said that the institution has always promoted innovation by embracing the best teaching methodologies, providing the best in class infrastructure and global exposure to students. This he said has resulted in students consistently winning laurels at the reputed state and national events.

About the project
The prototype developed, collects soot from four-stroke diesel internal combustion engine. The soot is tested using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy to find the percentage of the carbon. A PM 2.5 soot that is produced by IC Engine Exhaust has a fine particle size which has the ability to penetrate the lungs. The idea is to confine and bind that captured pollution into high-grade products which are useful to livelihood and this device can be used for almost all vehicles. The soot collected is converted into ink and paint using chemicals like rubbing alcohol, with a co-surfactant, most often cocamidopropyl betaine in water and then made into a Carbon Compound.
The selection
Student proposals from around the state are reviewed by an expert panel which has senior scientists from the renowned Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and other national labs. Selected projects are funded by KSCST. On completion, the projects are again reviewed by an expert panel which selects the projects for seminar and exhibition based on innovation and its contribution to society at large. This year MITE won the best project award from amongst 350 student teams from 109 colleges which competed at state-level exhibition.
MITE at KSCST
With 28 project sponsorship, MITE was at the top with maximum number of sponsorship from KSCST in 2019. The sponsorship has been increasing consistently with 11 projects in 2018, 16 in 2017 and 14 in 2016. With the support of expert teaching faculty, non-teaching faculty and the best laboratories, from the last two years MITE is the only college to receive the 'Best Project of the Year award' in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district in KSCST student project programme.
