Mangaluru, Jul 17: The PTA general body meeting of St Mary’s High School was held at the school auditorium on Saturday, July 13 at 9 am. The parents and guardians of over 400 students were present for the meeting.
The meeting began with a video of a prayer song. The chief guest and chief speaker of the day was Alban Rodrigues, president of Retired Teachers’ Association, Udupi district. A post graduate from Mysore University, Rodrigues, has served as a lecturer for 12 years and as a principal for 16 years at St Mary’s Pre University College, Shirva. He now renders his services as the administrator of the Dandathirtha Group of Institutions at Kaup. He is also a member of the Family Life Commission of the Mangaluru Diocese and a resource person at the Family Life Service Centre in Mangaluru- Udupi Districts.
The chief speaker addressed the parents for about an hour. Quoting Khalil Gibran’s ‘Our children are not our children’, he spoke about different types of parents, truths about education, role of parents in helping their child to succeed, importance of following a balanced time-table at home, need to maintain a rapport with school and teachers, he stressed on the need to make the home environment safe, secure and encouraging. He lauded the school for securing 100% results in the SSLC Board Examinations of March 2018-19.
Taking a few students as volunteers, he demonstrated important facets of counselling – positive and negative talk, transfer of parents’ anxiety to the children. His talk was interspersed with plenty of anecdotes and experiences. He concluded with one strong message to the parents: ‘love, but don’t pamper your children’.
Sr Maria Gloria AC, the local manager, extended a warm welcome to all gathered and introduced the chief guest for the program. Sr Spoorthi, a faculty member, read the names of the highest scorers of the SSLC Board Examinations, March 2019.

The report of the previous meeting and a summary of the executive committee’s activities for the year 2018-’19 were read out by the secretary, Anita Gomes. The audited statement of accounts was placed before the general body by the president and treasurer, Sr Nandika AC.
Elections were also conducted to form the new executive committee of the association. Many parents volunteered to become the representatives for the academic year.
The headmistress, Sr Nandika AC briefed the parents on the rules and regulations expected from their wards, a tentative program of the academic year and requested their co-operation in making the year a successful one.
Faculty member, Shyamala proposed the vote of thanks, and the entire program was compeered by Vipin Kumari, a teaching faculty.
Meeting concluded with the singing of the national anthem.
