‘Trump Tariff’ on India misguided, tells us congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi

Washington, Apr 4: Democrat Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has termed former President Donald Trump’s recent tariffs on India as “misguided,” warning that the move could harm economic, diplomatic, and security relations between the two nations.

Speaking on Thursday, Krishnamoorthi expressed concern that the blanket tariffs would place undue strain on ties with India, which he described as a crucial partner in promoting shared prosperity and countering the military and economic threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

“President Trump’s latest blanket tariffs on India are not only misguided but also profoundly damaging to the economic, diplomatic, and security interests of the US. At a time when our partnership with India is more crucial than ever to our shared prosperity and coordinated efforts to counter the military aggression and economic coercion of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), these tariffs place an unnecessary strain on our relationship with the world’s largest democracy,” he stated.

Krishnamoorthi, one of five Indian-origin members of the House of Representatives, emphasized that while the US-India partnership remains strong, the new tariffs would increase costs for American families and impose additional burdens on businesses in both countries.

The other Indian-origin representatives in the House include Ro Khanna, Ami Bera, Shri Thanedar, and Pramila Jayapal.

“I strongly urge President Trump to reverse his harmful new tariffs, including those on Indian imports, and instead prioritize the well-being of American families, the strength of the US-India partnership, and our collective economic and national security in the face of authoritarian threats,” Krishnamoorthi urged.

The reciprocal tariff system introduced by Trump on Wednesday aims to impose higher tariffs on countries that levy high duties on US imports or maintain significant trade surpluses.

Under the new policy, a baseline rate of 10% has been imposed on all imports into the US, with varying rates applied to specific countries. Imports from India will be taxed at 26%, China at 34%, and the European Union at 20%.
