Mangaluru, Nov 29: St Agnes PU College held its annual sports day 2k23 at the college grounds on November 29. The sky was a cerulean blue as the students assembled on the grounds to participate in the marchpast. The event aimed to promote physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmenship among the students.
The day began with an impressive inaugural ceremony featuring the band, and a guard of honour to welcome the esteemed chief guest Lilly Pais, district president, Karnataka Physical Education Teachers’ Association, DK and Sr Dr Maria Roopa, joint secretary, Agnes Institutions, principal Sr Norine DSouza, vice-principal Sr Janet Sequiera, the physical director Jayashree, PTA vice-president Prof Josyln Lobo, and all the dignitaries. There was an air of excitement as students, faculty and PTA members gathered to witness the day’s sporting events.
The march past with its synchronised movements was the highlight of the day. It was judged by physical directors Arun Kumar Rai, Cassia High School, Puthuswamy, St Joseph’s High School and Poornashri, St Rita’s High School.
Jeeya and group invoked the blessings of the almighty. Likeitha, lecturer in Home Science welcomed and introduced the chief guest. After the solemn hoisting of the flag by Lilly Pais, she formally met the marching teams who were introduced to her by the physical director Jayashree.
Lilly Pais then addressed the gathering and congratulated the marching teams for their involvement and their discipline. She praised the girls for being champions in an array of sports where they have made a mark for themselves and brought name and fame to the institution. She emphasised the importance of physical fitness and the need to strive for lofty goals.
The torch relay led by the sports secretary Ananya Ashokan and the other national-level players Anushka, Diksha Karkera, Nahla Fathima, Tanvi J R, Kadeeja Noha was a beauteous sight to behold and a prideful moment. The state-level players marched in a dignified fashion as they carried the flag.
The NCC students of Army and Air wing marched in unison to the beat of the band and had an aura of swagger and a can –do spirit. The sports meet was then declared open with the release of the balloons by the chief guest, the principal Sr Norine DSouza and the other dignitaries.
Ananya Ashokan administered the oath and energised the teams. Hanaa Mariam and Ameka Bedi compered the opening ceremony with poise, while Pranamya Dechamma rendered the vote of thanks.
A variety of sports events were organised, including track and field events. Students showcased their athletic skills and competitive trait in events such as relays, long jump, shotput, javelin and tug-of-war etc. The day served to foster a sense of camraderie and healthy competition among students.
The valedictory ceremony was adeptly hosted by Prescilla Sheril, Abhiya welcomed the guests and Krithika S proposed the vote of thanks. The prize distribution ceremony was held to recognise outstanding performances and to celebrate the achievements of the winners in various sports categories.
The cheerleading teams added their zing to the day. The prayer song led by Sharon Patrao and group brought the curtains down on an exciting and fun-filled day. Overall it was a day filled with memorable moments and served to emphasise the importance of sports in holistic education.
