Mangaluru/Udupi, Jul 4: The twin districts did not receive much rain in the month of June, though the monsoon generally starts in the first week of June. However, from Thursday July 2, heavy rains are lashing both the districts. The same is continuing on Saturday also.
The rains are not continuous though. But the intensity is high in between intervals. On Friday, from morning till afternoon there was sunshine. However, after 3 pm heavy rains accompanied by winds lashed both the districts.
In many areas landslide has occurred due to incessant rains. Traffic also got disrupted due to the road work that is in progress at many places. Low lying areas got inundated. Meteorological department has announced orange alert in coastal districts and there is a possibility of heavy rains till July 7.
In the period that ended on the morning of Friday, Dakshina Kannada district received an average of 100.6 mm of rainfall. Bantwal received highest with 16.4 mm, while Mangaluru, Beltangady, Puttur and Sullia received 118 mm, 93.6 mm, 82.4 mm and 72.4 mm respectively.
Udupi received 93 mm rains while Kundapur and Karkala received 62 and 123 mm of rain respectively. The average rainfall in Udupi in the 24 hour period that ended at 8.30 am of Friday was 92 mm.
Artificial flood occurred at Baikampady industrial area of Mangaluru. Around six industries got affected due to this.
