Railways asks X to remove disturbing images of New Delhi Station stampede

New Delhi, Feb 21: The Railway Ministry has requested social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to remove certain distressing images and videos of the February 15 stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, citing concerns over women’s modesty and graphic content.

The tragic incident, which occurred on the stairs near platform number 14, claimed 18 lives and left several injured. The stampede was reportedly triggered by confusion over announcements for two Prayagraj-bound trains.

Railway sources stated that the decision to take down the content came after affected families requested intervention, describing the visuals as “disrespectful, disturbing, and traumatizing”.

"We received one specific complaint and identified at least half a dozen such videos and pictures in circulation," a railway official said. "A request was sent to X on February 16, asking them to remove the content within 36 hours."

A senior Railway Board official further highlighted that some of the images outrageously depicted body parts of deceased women, violating their dignity.
"People capturing and sharing these distressing visuals were unaware of the trauma it could cause to the victims' families," he said, adding that the move aims to protect the dignity of the deceased and survivors.

Under a December 24, 2023 notification, the Railway Ministry has empowered its Executive Director (Information & Publicity) to issue takedown notices to digital platforms for content violating any legal provisions related to the railways.
