Mumbai, Feb 21: Actor Bobby Deol revealed that he accepted the role of Baba Nirala in the web series Aashram at a time when he believed he would no longer be offered traditional hero roles. The series, which marked a turning point in his career, allowed him to explore a darker, layered character.
Directed by Prakash Jha, Aashram revolves around a self-styled godman, Baba Nirala (played by Deol), who runs an empire of deceit, crime, and exploitation under the guise of spirituality. The show’s first season premiered in 2020 and gained immense popularity.
Speaking at the trailer launch event for Aashram Season 3 Part 2, titled Ek Badnaam Aashram, Deol shared his thoughts on playing an anti-hero. “As actors, we always seek roles that are different from who we are in real life. I knew I wasn’t going to be offered hero roles anymore, so I wanted to experiment. When I took up this project, I didn’t tell anyone in my family. I wanted them to watch it first and then react,” he said.
The upcoming season will see Chandan Roy Sanyal and Aaditi Pohankar reprising their roles. Ek Badnaam Aashram is set to premiere on Amazon MX Player on February 27.
