Kasargod, Feb 22: In a historic moment for Kerala's Kasaragod district, a road was renamed in honour of legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on Friday. The batting great himself was present at the ceremony, having flown in from Dubai after commentating on the India vs Bangladesh ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match.
The Kasaragod Municipality officially renamed the ‘Kasargod Municipal Stadium Road’ as ‘Sunil Gavaskar Municipal Stadium Road’ in recognition of his immense contributions to cricket.

Gavaskar received a grand welcome upon his arrival, with local officials and cricket enthusiasts celebrating the occasion. Kasaragod MLA NA Nellikkunnu hailed the moment as ‘historic’, while municipality chairman Abbas Begum highlighted its significance for local cricket.
"Sunil Gavaskar's presence is expected to provide a major boost to the cricketing sector in the district, which has a rich history of nurturing talented players, including those who excelled in prestigious tournaments like the Ranji Trophy," Begum stated.
A key figure in India's 1983 World Cup-winning squad, Gavaskar was the first cricketer to surpass 10,000 Test runs. Since retiring, he has continued to contribute to the sport as a commentator and mentor. His visit to Kasaragod has further inspired budding cricketers in the region.
