Port Louis, Feb 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accepted an invitation to be the guest of honour at Mauritius' 57th National Day celebrations on March 12, Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced.

Addressing the Mauritian Parliament, Ramgoolam expressed his delight over PM Modi’s acceptance. "I have great pleasure to inform the House that following my invitation, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, has kindly agreed to be the Guest of Honour for our National Day celebrations," he said.

Mauritius observes National Day on March 12 each year, marking its independence from British rule in 1968 and its transition to a republic in 1992 within the Commonwealth.

Emphasizing the significance of Modi’s presence, Ramgoolam stated, "It is indeed a singular privilege for our country to host such a distinguished personality. Despite his tight schedule and recent visits to Paris and the United States, he has graciously agreed to be here as our special guest."

The visit, he said, is a reflection of the deep-rooted ties between India and Mauritius.

Last year, Indian President Droupadi Murmu had attended Mauritius' National Day celebrations as the Chief Guest, further reinforcing bilateral relations.

The invitation extended to PM Modi highlights the strong historical and cultural bonds between the two nations, underscoring India's continued support and cooperation with Mauritius.
