Mangaluru, Jun 8: With the lockdown relaxation coming into play in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, non-vegetarians in particular are finding that their pockets are burning. Fish price has skyrocketed to 300 percent of normal range. At the same time, there has not been a reduction in the price of chicken and mutton.
Mackerel which was priced at Rs 250 a kg about a month ago has gone up to Rs 400 now. Sardines priced at Rs 100 then now command a price of Rs 260. Prawns (white) price has soared to Rs 550 from Rs 300 while prawns (brown) are priced at 400 per kg from RS 250 earlier. Pomfret price has gone up from Rs 600 to Rs 1,000 while black pomfret is now priced at Rs 1,100 as compared to Rs 750 earlier. Silver fish price has also jumped to Rs 600 from 400.
Fish is now supplied to the coast from Goa, Andhra Pradesh and other destinations as fishing activity at Mangaluru and Malpe have almost come to a standstill. The price is soaring because of increased transportation cost and hike in demand.
Rise in price of chicken, mutton
Price of chicken and mutton which saw a steep rise during lockdown period continues to remain at that level. Chicken production is not commensurate with the demand and most of the shops do not get supply of chicken. At the same time, supply of mutton too has fallen steeply. Therefore, live chicken costs Rs 180, chicken without skin commands Rs 290 per kg while with skin the price stands at Rs 250. Mutton price hovers around Rs 850, the merchants reveal.
