Lockdown woes: Shivakumar seeks CM's nod to take charge on June 14

Bengaluru, June 6 (IANS): Congress troubleshooter D.K. Shivakumar, who was appointed president of the party's Karnataka unit in March, sought state chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa's permission to take charge on June 14 here, an official said on Saturday.

"Shivakumar has written to Yediyurappa to permit him to assume charge on June 14 at the party office in the city centre in view of the Covid-19-induced extended lockdown restrictions on large gatherings," party spokesman Ravi Gowda told IANS here.

Though party's interim president Sonia Gandhi appointed Shivakumar, 58, on March 11 as the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, he could not assume charge since then, as lockdown was enforced on March 25 and extended till June 30, with partial relaxation of curbs for social distancing.

"If permitted, I shall take charge in the presence of about 150 senior party leaders at our party office at a special programme, which will be telecast live across the state," said Shivakumar in his letter to the Chief Minister on Friday.

On the occasion, the party's local leaders and workers in all gram panchayats, municipality/corporation ward areas, block Congress and district Congress offices will gather at designated places to participate in the programme digitally.

"Taking charge as the party's state unit president is one of the important events for any political party. Tradition has it that this is done in a big way with a huge gathering. In view of the lockdown protocol due to the pandemic, the function will be held without large gathering at a given place and time," said the letter.

Shivakumar cancelled the programme scheduled on May 31 and on June 7 as the Central government on May 30 further extended the lockdown till June 30.

Party's senior leader V.S. Ugrappa told IANS on Friday that the programme would be streamed live at about 8,000 places, including 6,025 local bodies across the state and 198 civic wards in Bengaluru.

"We are expecting about 100 people to attend and view the event at 8,000 places, leading to participation by 8 lakh people," said Ugrappa.

Shivakumar's appointment came three months after Dinesh Gunde Rao resigned on December 9 following the party's debacle in the state assembly by-elections on December 5, in which it won only 2 out of the 15 seats, while the ruling BJP won 12 and one by an independent, with the support of the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S).

Shivakumar is a senior legislator from the Kanakapura assembly segment, about 60km south of Bengaluru in the southern state.

Shivakumar's brother D.K. Suresh is the party's Lok Sabha member from the Bangalure Rural constituency for the second time. He was the party's only candidate to have retained the seat, while 20 others lost in the May 2019 general election.

    Avinash,

Forget about strong opposition, even if the elections are won by Congress, BJP has expertise in buying winning candidates with money in a undemocratic way. We have seen it in Karnataka, Goa, MP and Assam. And you are talking of healthy democracy!

Even with the huge mandate received, top man at the center is not able to instill confidence in the people during the time of crisis. His nervousness and confusion has taken the toll and country is losing its war against virus and the economy as well. When will you find the replacement for him? Why can't experienced Gadkari is not considered for this post?

For your information BJP had not won the majority in Karnataka but managed to take power with money power. Time has come that people will dethrone this government at centre as well as state. Then let us talk about strong opposition again.

DKS, Siddu, Ivan, Ramanatha Rai, Mithun RaGa, Dont we have someone else, Why not new young blood, with new ideas and strategies? Why doesnt Cong function like a Corporate. In one of the national dailies, I read that a hunt for Yeddiyurappas replacement is already on ,by the BJP. Why cant it happen in Congress? You field the same ageing, rejected old leaders, you get the same result.

Yaar. Congress cannot function like a Corporate. It has to function like a 'dynasty' with 'family first' criteria.

Alan Dmello. To survive in Congress, any new youngsters have to ensure that their IQ matches with that of the leader Raul Vinci Khan. If it exceeds, then sorry, no entry into the party. Thats the reason youngsters do not join. Only the ones who are in the verge of retirement or close to the grave are selected .

What is the problem with these Andh Bhakts? They comment about Congress leaders but don't have inward look at their leadership. Only Gujju gang is ruling the country and all others are only for namesake. Why can't BJP have new blood as these old Gujju's have ruined the country? Totally confused leadership at the centre. Not able to contain Virus or lift the economy.

Even in Karnataka, all BJP leaders waiting for Yedyurappa to fail. They have same Young Eshwarappa trying to destabilise along with Koti Ravi and others. Shobha and Nalin, two "ek minute" MPs doing great job in dividing the people in the name of religion.

All those Congress leaders are at least doing their job of helping the people during this lockdown whereas BJP leaders are not to be seen anywhere except spreading venom.

Anamika. A strong opposition is a mandatory requirement for a helathy democracy.
The issue raised was of Congress . Why are we fielding the same candidates who have lost elections? Do we need the same results? Why cannot there be a change? Why do we have to go thru all of them again? and then again blame EVM and field the candidates again.?

Forget BJP, their candidates have won and a search is on for Yeddys successor.

    Alexie Saldanha,

You belong to which category? First one or second one?
Is Dynasty politics is limited to Congress alone or you also find it in BJP as well? What is your take on that?

For 2024 still 4 years to go? There is undercurrent now itself. Another 4 years will be difficult period for India and nobody can say what will happen next. So keep your forecast to yourself.

Citizens have seen the capability of one person during this crisis. No citizen want this country to be doomed.
