Kasargod, May 27: In a heart-wrenching incident which happened at Subbayyakatte near Paivalike in the district on Wednesday May 27 morning, two men who were trying to rescue a young bovine that had fallen into a well lost their lives.
The deceased happen to be Narayan (50) and his brother Shankar (40), from Subbayyakatte. They were trying to bring out a grown calf that had fallen into a well that does not have a protective wall.
Shankar had gone down the well with a rope to help the animal come out. He encountered difficulty in breathing there and hence slumped to the ground. At this sight, Narayan turned panicky and went down the well. He also collapsed there. The locals who heard the wails of the family members came running but could not save the lives of the brothers in spite of their best efforts.
Firemen from Uppala who rushed to the spot after being informed of the incident, brought the brothers out but both had lost their lives by then. The young cow was brought out safely by the fire personnel.
Both the deceased used to work as coolies. Their bodies were shifted to the taluk hospital at Mangalpady for post-mortem.
