Panaji, Feb 21: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has dismissed claims of declining tourism in the state, asserting that certain social media influencers are attempting to "shift perceptions" about the coastal destination.
Speaking at the ABP Network's Ideas of India Summit 2025, Sawant stated that Goa remains a "safe and clean" tourist haven, with tourism growing by 21%. "Compared to eight million tourists last year, the state welcomed 10 million visitors this year," he claimed.

He explained that efforts to decongest popular sites made it seem as if beaches were empty during New Year's celebrations. "Goa is a brand in itself, and it continues to attract visitors seeking sun, sand, and sea," he added.
Addressing concerns about tourist safety, Sawant acknowledged two recent assault cases but downplayed them as incidents involving both parties. He also urged travellers to make bookings only through government-approved websites to ensure a smooth experience.
The chief minister highlighted Goa's economic shift from mining to tourism and pharmaceuticals, alongside the government's push for infrastructure development. "The state and Centre have invested Rs 40,000 cr in roads and bridges," he noted.
Touching upon Goa’s cultural and spiritual heritage, he remarked that many are unaware of the state's prominent temples and Hindu population.
On governance, he emphasized Goa’s Uniform Civil Code, which has been in place since 1961, mandating birth, death, and marriage registrations for all. "What is the harm in this?" he questioned, responding to critics.
Sawant also expressed confidence in Goa achieving ‘Viksit Goa’ by 2037—ten years ahead of the national target. As for future political aspirations, he credited his success to PM Narendra Modi’s guidance and his own leadership but avoided speculations about a move to the Centre.
