Mangaluru, May 27: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, has informed through a tweet that the central government has issued an order extending the fishing ban by two weeks. Therefore, deep sea mechanized fishing, which was paralyzed due to lockdown, is permissible till June 14, he stated.

Deputy director in the fisheries department, Parshwanath, responded by saying that the central government has issued order postponing the fish ban period. However, the rule will come into force only after the state government issues an order to that affect, he stated.

As per the normal fishing season followed by the fisheries department, May 31 happens to be the last day for fishing activity and the activity resumes only after a gap of 61 days on August 1. But this year, the fishermen had faced lot of problems and losses due to lockdown. Because of this problem, the ban has been set back by two weeks, it is said. In the recent past too, country boats and small mechanized boats alone were allowed to operate in Dakshina Kannada district because of social distancing norms.

The fishermen leaders say that this postponement will not result in any major revenue for the fishing industry as the fishing workers have already left to their native places.
