Mangalur, May 6: The gaur that all of a sudden had made an appearance at Mannagudda in the heart of the city on Tuesday morning and had given rise to panic among the people residing in that part of the city breathed its last all of a sudden on Tuesday evening.
After the animal was sighted, forest department had, with the support of police department, succeeded in tranquillising and taking the animal under control. However, in the evening, the animal in question was taken to Charmadi and released into the forest but the gaur did not survive.
Sensing that trying to catch the animal in the populous areas of the city was a daunting task fraught with risks, the forest department had sought the assistance of experts in that field. The animal, which had become unconscious after being injected with tranquillisers, was taken away and released into the forest at Charmadi in the Western Ghats.
The veterinarians confirmed that the gaur lost its life due to heart attack. It is believed that the dosage of the tranquillisers injected into the animal's body would have been more than the actual dosage required because of the anxiety of the officials in rescuing the animal that was on the run.
