Mangaluru: Senior citizen with 'dementia' booked for obstructing policemen during lockdown

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 17: In an incident which happened at Lalbagh here on the evening of Thursday April 16, an aged man reportedly suffering from dementia, was booked by the police for obstructing police from discharging their duties when lockdown was in force.

The traffic police discharging their duties at Lalbagh had stopped a senior citizen who was found moving in his car when lockdown was in force. They asked the man the purpose and destination of his travel at which the man reportedly began to engage in verbal altercation with the police and used filthy language against them. The police wanted to check his pass, but the man confessed that he did not have one, and argued that he was on way to Shedigudde and did not need any pass. He also tried to push aside barricade placed on the way.

A case was thereafter registered against the man, who reportedly is a chartered accountant by profession, at Urva police station. Charges under section 269, 353 and 564 of Indian Penal Code were levelled against him. The police reportedly showed lenience and desisted from confiscating the car or arresting him, taking into consideration his advanced age.

According to sources, the offender is a chartered accountant with rich experience and is from a very reputed family. It is gathered that he is unwell and suffering from mental instability. Certain sources claimed that he was not even supposed to drive.

There are also claims that he is suffering from dementia and that he does not even remember names of his partners. However, all these do not justify his act of using unparliamentarily words and abusive language against the cops, the policemen point out.

My grand mother has dementia and I know the difficulties, Here the family(children) should be responsible and booked for letting him go out of the house. No matter what his profession is/was is secondary. It's high time people are respected based on their behaviour and not age. It's a nice way to get away with nowadays(Mr Subramanian Swamy asking the govt to release Rapist Asaram Bapu based on his age).

The moment his children land on Indian soil, they should be arrested and they should apologise in person to the police officials. Taking action on the patient is foolishness.

Even if they have a car at home, there should be a driver hired to take them around. This is negligence to the nth order. Allowing him access to the car keys and the car. When a bollywood actor or a common man does drink and drive, it's an offense. When a person who is not mentally stable enough to drive a car is driving, then the immediate family is responsible. Here as the person's wife also senior, then the children are responsible.

As claimed somewhere; if he has Alzheimer's, he would definitely not have been able to navigate the vehicle & tell his destination?? It looks like a mixed mental disorder!
BTW, unless one has a vocabulary of abusive words recorded in the brain, one cannot hurl them so fluently!

Please read up on dementia! Unless you know of someone who has dementia/Alzheimer's or any other difficulty, you shouldn't be judgemental. They generally become defensive and use harsh words or action when they become too agitated with the confusion in their head or when they feel scared. Understand the underlying issue before calling it a character flaw! I'm sure even you can use curse words and so can any human being!

When here police had noticed his face expression one would immediately saw he is a sick person. They were only on their laws and rules concentrated and telling he is using abusing words and not allowing them to dispatch their duties.Lord, dear police he is a sick man and dont know what he is speaking.Instead of argueing with him,ask him to take care to the side.talk gently with him.Still wish his family would take care of him and dont allow him self to drive.he can meet with accident and so not only self but another innocent person or family drive in tragody.we all know demencia patients are hard to control, but with proper medicine can be kept under control.Only we must think ,they dont know what they are doing and talking. In their head is some irritation ,they too dont know how to go with it.I really pity them and family too.Police too should be from time to time schooled in this thema.

We all will become old one day and will act like a child. However Police failed to recognize him . When an educated person ask the police what is the pass then and there itself they should have recognized his mental state. Yes they should have calmly asked him to call his relatives or friends to the spot and sorted out the matter.

No doubt the police was not rude.

This sick nonagenarian deserves a better treatment. The civility of police force is measured on how they treat the elderly with compassion and concern. The elderly man could have used better language but he is having the excuse of being old and sick. The least, police could have prevented the matter being recorded and uploaded in social media. Shameful...!

Readers, PM Modiji, had declared a complete Lockdown, in our nation, This senior citizen, who is alleged to be suffering from dementia, is culpable for breaking the laws, assigned to control Covid19 pandemic.... He cannot abuse police men on duty for enforcing the clampdown and has to be booked under IPC ......What is more painfully disheartening, is the absolute mockery of laws, by the Gowda clan !!!! The BJP government is equally culpable for allowing the marriage of the grand son of Deva Gowda, to summarily celebrate with pomp n glory, violating n flouting, Lockdown regulations !!!! This is unacceptable !!! We cannot have two laws, one for VVIP and the other for common citizens of our nation !!!

    To the Family:
Please take care of him. Appoint care taker or else same problem will repeat in future. Public will not consider him like family member. You are creating problem to the public by neglecting his decease.

    To the Police department:
Please analyse the situation, you need proper training in the department.
When a senior citizen behaved unlawfully, immediately you should have taken him to custody with respectfully and called his family members and warn them with 1st notice. In future you can charge them with fine or punishment. Actually the police have done good work. The fit of anger both were not proper at the situation.

    To the public:
Please don’t take every issue to communal and if it is your own relative or friend blame the other side. Please you too analyse the situation and comment.

In Many Countries doctors/hospitals have to report to department of motor vehicles(RTO) if someone is not able to safely operate a motor vehicle. (Conditions like poor vision, seizure/epilepsy(Fits), advanced dementia. After certain age RTO offices check vision before reissuing the license. in wrong directions/one way roads.
In some instances advanced age might slow down body relexes like applying brakes/accelleration, turning etc. In many instances people have driven

It is not easy to stop someone from driving if they have been driving for many years and they dont know that they have dementia. At some stage family(spouse and children have to take away the Car keys. It is very challenging and not easy . This can cause conflict within the family. Doctors can take a role in these situations. Lawmakers should think in this direction to prevent usafe drivers on the road, for the safety of everyone.

His behaviour apart, he could pose a high risk to pedestrians & other vehicles if his mind were to go blank suddenly! BTW, Alzheimer's is a very painful & long drawn disease; there was an Amitabh starrer, Black, on Alzheimers!

This gentleman has Alzheimer's disease and he didn't even know what the pass was and what lockdown was(if you have seen the unedited video). It is informed that he is living with his wife and his children are abroad.
I appreciate the patience of the policemen irrespective of filthy words hurled against them by senior citizen. Policemen really have shown restraint.
We can not blame the senior citizen because he did not know what he was doing. He probably does not have driving licence also. The question is how he was allowed to go out of the house? If he was allowed he would have driven somewhere..God only knows.
We should be sympathetic to the patient and appreciate the policemen.
Mean time the family should take care that this man should not be allowed to go out of the house. Others who have senior citizens with them with or without dementia should be careful as they are more vulnerable to COVID 19.

The Dementia is very common disease the medical science no permanent cure. Many great personality in the world had suffered from it and still many suffering.

I am glad that he was not lynched by the mob that is very common in India these days. But in United Kingdom such patients voluntarily carry tag around there neck so that in case of emergency the authorities can handled the case easily.

I probably assume that this old man has no one to help for his daily needs and went alone. But the same time the law enforcement officials should be kind and have some respect to all ages. The mob control is part of their training it is the time to show their patience with service to the nation.

I am a daughter of a dimentia patient and I can very well understand the difficulty of both him and his family members as well as of the general public and the police man. It is extremely difficult to make the patient understand the situation and hold him in home by his family members as well. The abusing words used by him to the policeman is also part of his sickness. This is a very very difficult disease to handle with no cure found yet.
My humble request is to excuse him and his family for this and to understand their difficulty and pray for the well being 🙏

I also request our capable doctors and scientists to do more research on this disease because this is one such disease which is extremely challenging for the patient, his family, friends, neighbours and to all his surroundings, sometimes to the entire city.

Thank you 'Penmightierthanthesword' for the kind words, taking this incident as an example I also request you to encourage our doctors and scientists how so ever possible from you, to do more research over this disease because no required attention is given for the research, the reason for this is such patients refuse to even go to the doctor and report, making it difficult for the family members to get the medication. Doctors/government think as there are no many reported cases there is no need to give time for this research. I also stress that there is lack of awareness in the society on this disease which is also very much required.
Family members after prolonging frustration and mental burden/stress just ignore the patient with no help and after years of suffering the patient finally forgets everything i.e., even how to eat, drink and sometimes the brain forgets how to function the heart and other organs leading to death.

On the basis of age and medical conditions please pardon him, but question his children in case he is staying with children. He should not have come on road. The bad words he used is also due to his health condition. It looks like he is not aware about current situation in the world due to COVID19.

This news is well written, but failed to identify who this man is, and his age. I believe the corps should be trained on psychology, behavior based trainings so that they're able to identify personality and behavioural backgrounds of the person they intervene. Here the corps have done their duty rightly in-spite of rational behavior by this elderly person.

A phone call to his relatives might have sorted this situation.
However, moral of the story is to be polite and humble, respect one and other, everything will be smoother.

Anyone else coming across the video or looking at this situation, please do remeber he seems to be quite elderly and genuinely doesn't seem to know why are we in a lockdown.

People those who suffer from dementia usually get annoyed for silly reasons and use abusive language even for the treating doctors when they are taken to the hospitals. Also they are totally out of memory.
In such situations family members must take extra care of these people. Absolutely there is no room to slap cases on this senior citizen since he's a dementia patient.

Blame his family members for allowing him out. I saw the video. Appreciate the patience of police to remain calm despite they were hurled with filthy abuses. But any sane man would come to know that this Senior person is out of his mind and has some issues. Unfortunately our police force are not trained or counselled well enough to handle such situation and peoples. Only saving grace is that the Police dint get provoked despite this man's aggressive attitude towards them and kept on saying " What can we do, he is an old man, its our unfortunate".

Having said that it s a serious Negligence from his family members for letting or not knowing that he is out of house, driving a car. He could have gone into panic attack because of his own aggressiveness. He could be danger to general public sitting behind Steering wheel. Better give a warning to family member's and let go. Do not book any case. Senior Police official should involve.

It is certainly not a joke.
All medical specialists and even the PM had given a call that ' Senior Citizens ' care should be of utmost priority! It is deduced that they are the most vulnerable to the virus attack ...So it was dangerous from that angle too ! How a person having Dementia of sorts is allowed to go out on his own leave alone drive is a Million Dollar Question !
I see humor in almost everything but frankly in this I could not.
That gentleman as many might have recognized by now and his family have looked after account books of the high mighty and even the commob man of Mangalore. He certainly would not have acted the way he did but for his health conditions.

If he or his fly members called him immediately for any help MLA would have given necessary items to their fly. and if this old person went out without the notice of the fly then thye could have called police immediately and police could have traced him. Always for educated and rich people if police caught then one or other problem starts. This is India. before we talk we should change our self and respect govt rules.
