Bengaluru: Liquor shops might not open in state even after April 14

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Apr 11: "I have not recommended for the sale of liquor with the government. Sale of liquor is not more important than the life of people. So my friends, who are hell bent on drinking alcoholic drinks, should not pester," said H Nagesh, minister for excise, state of Karnataka, thereby hinting that the liquor shops might not open even after April 14.

Liquor shops throughout the country are closed in the wake of the lock down. Already seven people of Karnataka have committed suicide due to non-availability of liquor. Others, who are addicted to alcoholic drinks are waiting eagerly for wine shops to open after April 14.

Excise minister H Nagesh

Speaking on the subject Excise minister H Nagesh said, "My friends, who consume alcoholic drinks, have to support the lockdown orders of the state and central governments. Lockdown has to continue without any doubt. The number of infected persons due to Covid-19 virus is increasing day by day in the state. So I have not recommended to the government to open the wine shops after April 14.

"It is better for alcohol addicts to get counselling because there is no guarantee that the wine shops will open even after the end of the lockdown period. Only after the lock down period gets over, I will discuss this matter with chief minister B S Yediyurappa."

    Hello Sir,

We respect your decision...we have already been quarantined since more than 3 weeks , would request to have the delivery of liquor through some app, there are lot many apps available in most of the countries and it used to be there in Bangalore also, with this people will be getting good quality alcohol and with same rate and the tipplers who is paying through some unknown resource and waiting their money in this pandemic situation they could use the money in the right direction also (person who drinks regularly he will definitely move here and there not considering the safety of himself and his family, kids ...spending the money which will also affect their childrens for proper food).with delivery made available there will be no mass gathering which is the biggest worry and people will be more caring towards their family.Just a thought!

Readers, my sincere, humble, request to excise ministers, in all states of India. Please continue the Lockdown of all wine shops n bars, indefinitely, even after the demise of Covid19 pandemic, in our nation.....The reason is very pretty obvious. Alcohol has claimed numerous lives, destroyed entire families !!!!! Time to boot out alcoholic addiction at the earliest !!!!!

Yes.. Government should not think of the profit deriving from the sale of liquor but should consider the disadvantages of consuming the liquor by the families.. . His income will destroy, health will destroy, family will destroy, children will suffer, then other house members start consuming the liquor even some ladies too get addicted and what not... Causing depression, liver damage.... ooops hundreds of problems.... Good decision... Let's built the healthy nation...

You are right. transfer the excise duty towards income tax and increase the taxes in other items that you consume. At the end it needs to get the revenue for the Govt either from alcohol tax or other tax. Just do the maths....
Drink responsibly. No harm. No mixing religion please. Drinking is individual choice in India.

I had a interesting discussion on this ,though cant put all of it here. Few points are if there is a total ban the ones who will shell out more are the non drinkers . Why? Heres y.
Karnataka govt monthly revenue is abouy 1600 cr monthly.
If this is not there then where wil the defocit be filled from ?
Where are the excise staff and machinery set up go and who will pay to maintain that ?
All this shortfall will fall on the general public in form of new cess or tax
The alcoholic who spends about 5000 a month contributes about 900 as taxes
So net net if the alcoholic has no alcahol he will pay some unknown tax of 900 and save 4100 rupees and somehow the non alcaholics who never knew about this will now start paying this additional tax.
So before you chant ban ......think well

@sahil maybe in different few cases not all. People die in accident, can you ban vehicle's? You might have tobacco, because of that many people die every year can you ban? Just because you'll don't drink don't act like a saint.

Yes...wine shops should not open. Government should not focus on the income deriving out of the sale of liquor rather should concentrate on the disadvantages derived out of it. Most of the population belong to the average middle class families and daily wage earner families. Their income goes to wine shops..so savings are nothing. Destruction of health,, family, children and so on. Many become alcoholic and they get depressed when such type of situation arises...instead recognise the addicts, take them to rehabilitation centres, help them to come out and give guidance and encouragement how to live life and how to save income. Many houses are sold off, gold, property, valuables and many families ruined....hitting, fighting etc. Children can't study and they too follow the footsteps of the alcoholic....lets build a healthy nation....
