Media Release

Udupi, Feb 24: By composting household waste instead of disposing of it on the streets, the fertility of gardens can be increased while also preventing waste accumulation along roadsides, thus keeping the environment clean, said Dayanand, the development officer of Thenkanidiyur gram panchayat.

Speaking at an environmental awareness programme organized on Sunday, February 23 at the St Annama Church Hall in Thottam, he emphasized that the event was held in collaboration with the Church’s Environmental Commission, the Coordination Interfaith Harmony Committee – Thottam, and the Gram Panchayats of Thenkanidiyur and Badanidiyur. He stressed that if people do not show concern for the environment, the entire ecosystem could face dire consequences. He further added that planting trees can help reduce rising temperatures, and every individual has a responsibility to protect the environment.

Fr Denis D’Sa, parish priest, St Anne’s Church, Thottam stated that climate change is largely caused by environmental imbalance. To find a solution, greater importance must be given to environmental conservation, he said. He pointed out that air, water, soil, and trees are invaluable resources that must be preserved forever and urged everyone to take responsibility for protecting the environment.

Ramesh Tingalaya, president of the Coordination Interfaith Harmony Committee – Thottam, highlighted the need to create environmental awareness among children. He noted the growing problem of waste management and urged the panchayats to take appropriate measures while also encouraging citizens to stop indiscriminate waste disposal.

Prof Steven Quadros Permude delivered a lecture on the adverse effects of environmental degradation. As part of the programme, sanitation workers and ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers from the Thenkanidiyur and Badanidiyur gram panchayat areas were felicitated.

The event saw the participation of Thenkanidiyur gram panchayat president Shobha D Nayak, Badanidiyur gram panchayat president Yashodha Acharya, panchayat secretary Gururaj, vice president of the Church Pastoral Council Sunil Fernandes, secretary Blesilla Crasta, coordinator of 20 commissions Vanitha Fernandes, convent head Sister Sushma, vice president of the Coordination Interfaith Harmony Committee – Thottam Shabbir Saheb, and community leaders including Prakhyat Shetty, Sharath Shetty, Meena Pinto, and Yadav.
