Bengaluru, Apr 7: The State Government’s move to mobilise funds for talking the global Corona Virus (COVID 19) epidemic by going for a 30 per cent cut in the salaries of all the six lakh State Government employees as also employees of the State-run boards and corporations has been strongly opposed by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President D K Shiva Kumar.

Addressing the media at the party office on Tuesday, the newly appointed KPCC President, who is yet to formally take charge of his new post, said Karnataka’s fiscal position was no so pathetic as to forcibly cut the salaries of the government employees.

“The six lac government employees have to feed their family members, and have other commitments such as repaying loans, payment of school/college fee, house rent. Hence, it was not a viable option to cut salaries of employees,’’ he said.

The former minister urged the B S Yediyurappa government to stop all development work if required and ensure monthly payment of salaries.

The Congress leader was responding to a query on the proposed government’s plan to cut salary of its employees following slowdown in revenue collection and shortage of cash during the lockdown period.

With several social media platforms spreading fake news and blaming some community members for spread of the COVID-19, KPCC has urged the government to arrest all those indulged in “communal politics” by spreading rumours during the lockdown.

The State Congress has termed the performance of the BJP government in handling of the COVID-19 as “unsatisfactory” and “facilities for testing the patients are fall short of the requirement.’’

He pointed out that even the available facilities in health centres and hospitals have not been effectively used.

The government must take steps for providing necessary testing and other medical equipment for each districts. Steps to be taken to ensure that testing expenses should not exceed Rs 4500, Shivakumar said.

Supporting some of the initiatives taken by the State Government, the Congress leader urged the government to bear expenses of testing expenses of people who tested positive in private laboratories.

He said sufficient ventilators must be made available and utilize them by roping in available anesthetists.

The KPCC has also demanded that the State Government must include borewell drilling work in the list of Essential Services to mitigate the drinking water crisis in villages in this summer.

Several parts of the state have been facing a severe shortage of potable water, especially in rural areas, he said and demanded the government to take up the work of drilling borewells on a war footing measure.

Shivakumar urged the government to call a meeting of owners of rigging machines for initiating work on drilling of borewells.

The workers of borwell drillers to be provided benefits under the social security schemes.

“This work may be temporarily listed as “essential services,’’ he said.

DKS is right and fully justified. Just because some among the employees may not be doing their work properly or even may be correct, it doesn't mean all should suffer. As DKS said all persons, including government employees have their own responsibilities and commitments.

Some argue that private employees are laid off and even face salary cuts. But the issue is the salary of government employees and that is done by the government. As for private employees or even unorganised labourers and migrants, the matter has to be dealt by the respective employers and governments.

So, one should not mix issues and get confused. DKS spoke about the problems of government employees. The private sector employees, unorganised labourers or migrants or for that matter small scale industrialists, private entrepreneurs or freelancers is entirely different. All of us need to be pragmatic and should not get confused.

The salary of govt employees should be cut to half forever. They are being paid exhorbitant salary, perks and holidays in comparison to other private sectors. Moreover, 99% of them are corrupt.

Even during this time, if they are not cooperating with the government then why the govt is asking general public to contribute funds to the CM and PMs relief funds?

All have to contribute. govt employees enjoy the benefit and their output is almost zero.

Shouldn't pass sweeping argument like every Govt staffs indulge in corruption not everyone indulge in it...Many of them employee find solace in the fact that they can meet their ends with salary... Also salary of Govt staffs are meager compared to Pvt MNC's ... Any cut in salary will seriously affect Group C and D staffs

I oppose comments of DKS even though i am supporter of congress only for the reason that i too run a business and i have incurred huge losses due to current crisis.

Some of the Govt employees make us run pillar to post unless we pay them bribe which i have experienced.

When the entire market has collapsed and we are suffering ,there is nothing wrong in tking pay cut for some time.

If you are thinking of appeasing the vote bank of 6 lac govt employees and their families, then its pure politics and nothing else. This is temporary crisis where everyone needs support. Stop playing politics here please.

I didnt mean to be offensive here. But look at the difference in treatment here. The government sector employees are shielded from a lot of disasters. Govt employees arent as much prone to layoffs, they have things like time to time salary hike and other perks and the secure feeling of being in a govt job. But look at us in the private sector. The govt said, relaxation of 3 EMI. But everyone knows how it works. Here you are treated to a paycut and on the other side, you get to oay interest on the entire principal amount for differing 3 EMI. I dont want to go on writing the so many differences between a govt and a private employees. We are fighting our wars everyday without anyone listening to us. But yes understanding your woes as a grassroot govt employee, the salary deduction should happen and not just one month but two months for all A and B class employees.

Yes exactly all are not well settled. Same expenses others also have to pay on rent, medical, household items without any allowances for the employees. Private sector employees get dry salary whereas govt officials get house rent allowance, travelling expenses, medical, newspaper.. so many allowances. Employees of private sectors will not get salary from April till reopens. How to pay rent, buy grocery, electricity bill and so on ? Govt officials should be happy that they are getting salary at least 70% . Be happy and think of non govt. Workers, house maids, daily wage workers etc. Who will pay for them? Mabel, may be employers make money but not the employees. Employees get just salary...
