Mangalore, Nov 12: Sunday November 10 was a memorableday for the city of Managlore and for the visually challenged children of Roman and Catherine school, Mangalore. Participants from various cities like Mangalore, Bangalore and Chickmagalur took part in “BMW – Navnit Motors Guiding Stars 2013”, the annual Round Table Treasure Hunt.
The rally was flagged off by U T Khadar, Minister for Health and Family Welfare. The participants were faced with a challenge of navigating solely with the guidance of visually challenged children.
The children of Roman and Catherine school sat alongside these enthusiastic car drivers trying to decode a set of clues given to them. The uniqueness of the treasure hunt is that only the visually challenged navigator can read these clues that are provided in braille. In the process, the children picked three treasures and made new friends, all the while enjoying the breeze on the drive.
This was the fourth consecutive year that round table is conducting this event successfully. With over 120 participants, this was the highest participation from the public as compared to previous years.The event flag off was done along with corporator of Kannur, Sudhir Shetty.
In his address, U T Khadar recognized the contribution of Round Table towards the specially abled children and also his own experience as a participant in events like these. He also conveyed his appreciation of the fact that the treasure hunt highlighted the abilities of the visually challenged.He finally congratulated the Round table on the work done and wished them the best for the future. Chairman of Round Table Mangalore, Neil Rodrigues further explained the significance of the event in terms of awareness of the capabilities of the visually challenged and the specially abled people overall.
BMW Navnit motors was the chief partner of the event along with Round Table, Mangalore.
The winners of the event were Vasudev Kamath and team,with navigator Anvith after decoding 31 clues successfully. The runners-up of the event were Sanjay Kamath and team with navigators Bhavya and Mohammed Khaif after decoding 28 clues.
The children ended their day with a grand lunch and a musical program at Gandhi Park.
