Panaji, Dec 28: Shack operators in Goa have raised serious concerns over irregular garbage collection on the state’s popular beaches, accusing the tourism department’s contracted cleaning agency of neglecting its duties. The resulting trash pile-ups have marred the beauty of Goa’s iconic shores, especially at Calangute and Candolim beaches, which attract throngs of tourists during the year-end season.
Cruz Cardozo, president of the Shack Owners Welfare Society – Goa, criticized the cleaning contractor for failing to maintain a regular schedule. "Despite our repeated requests, the contractor cited excuses like vehicle breakdowns to justify their lapses. This has led to unsanitary conditions, tarnishing Goa’s reputation as a premier tourist destination and posing severe health and environmental risks," he said.

Cardozo urged tourism minister Rohan Khaunte and director Suneel Anchipaka to take strict action against the contractor and ensure the issue is resolved swiftly. He also called for contingency plans to address operational setbacks, such as vehicle breakdowns, to prevent disruptions in garbage collection.
Adding to the grievances, Manuel Cardozo, president of the Goan Traditional Shacks Owners Association, expressed frustration over the contractor's lack of accountability. "Foreign tourists expect clean beaches, but the contractor’s inconsistent efforts create a poor impression. Nobody is holding them responsible, and the work is carried out at their convenience," he said.
The shack owners also pointed to irresponsible behavior by tourists as a contributing factor. Litter, including plastic cups, plates, cutlery, and alcohol bottles, often ends up scattered across the sand. While shack operators ensure proper waste management within their premises, they feel unsupported by the cleaning agency.
The shack owners have urged the government to impose strict accountability measures on the cleaning contractor and to take immediate steps to maintain the cleanliness of Goa’s beaches, preserving the state’s image as a world-class tourist destination.
