Gurugram, Mar 31: The highly anticipated Global Indian Pravasi Kabaddi League (GI-PKL) is set to begin on April 18 in Gurugram, drawing enthusiastic participation from international kabaddi stars eager to showcase their talent on Indian soil. Players from Hungary, Poland, England, and Hong Kong have expressed their excitement about competing in the league, which is rapidly gaining global attention.

With representation from Egypt, Kenya, Argentina, Germany, England, Norway, and Poland, the inaugural season of GI-PKL will feature 12 teams (six men's and six women's teams) and will be broadcast live on Sony Sports Network, reaching fans worldwide.

International players have shared their enthusiasm for joining the competition. The captain of Poland’s women’s kabaddi team eagerly stated, “I’m proud to lead my team and cannot wait to be a part of GI-PKL.” Similarly, Hungary’s women's team skipper expressed, “I’m thrilled to compete in GI-PKL.” Another Hungarian player echoed this excitement, adding, “This is an incredible opportunity for us to showcase our skills.”

The enthusiasm extends to Hong Kong China’s women’s team, with their captain stating, “I’m looking forward to competing in India, the home of Kabaddi.” One of her teammates added, “I can’t wait to be part of this thrilling experience.”

Players from England are equally eager to take on the challenge. “Hello India! I’m from England, and I’m excited to play in the Global Indian Pravasi Kabaddi League,” said one English player. Another, named Alex, shared, “I’m passionate about Kabaddi and ready for the GI-PKL challenge.”

Karthik Dammu, founder of the GI-PKL women’s league, emphasized the league’s importance in promoting international talent. “Kabaddi’s deep roots in India are now reaching a global stage. Watching athletes from different countries compete will not only intensify the game but also introduce fresh strategies. This is just the beginning of a truly international Kabaddi experience.”

Similarly, Sohan Tusir, founder of the Just Kabaddi League, highlighted the significance of the GI-PKL, stating, “This league will create a new generation of kabaddi stars, offering a global platform to showcase emerging talent.”

Last week, the league celebrated a milestone with the grand unveiling of its Championship Trophy in Delhi. D. Suresh, IAS, Principal Secretary, Industries & Commerce, Government of Haryana, and former Indian kabaddi team captain Deepak Hooda were among the dignitaries present. The Holistic International Pravasi Sports Association (HIPSA), which oversees the league, played a key role in the event.

The GI-PKL Championship Trophy represents the pinnacle of success, with both men’s and women’s winners crowned, but only one team earning the prestigious grand championship title.

The women’s teams competing in GI-PKL include Marathi Falcons, Bhojpuri Leopardess, Telugu Cheetahs, Tamil Lioness, Punjabi Tigress, and Haryanvi Eagles, while the men’s teams feature Marathi Vultures, Bhojpuri Leopards, Telugu Panthers, Tamil Lions, Punjabi Tigers, and Haryanvi Sharks.

HIPSA has been instrumental in kabaddi’s international expansion. In March 2024, it played a key role in securing kabaddi’s inclusion in the Guinness World Records at an event in Panchkula’s Tau Devilal Stadium, attended by Haryana’s Governor, Shree Bandaru Dattatreya.

With an electrifying format and global participation, GI-PKL is set to redefine the future of kabaddi, creating history as the sport continues its meteoric rise on the world stage.
