Kolkata, Mar 10: A senior citizen has been arrested for allegedly raping a Delhi-based woman at a hotel in South Kolkata on March 7, police confirmed on Monday. The victim, who is currently staying in Kolkata for work, lodged a formal complaint after an initial period of shock and silence.
According to her statement, the accused, who introduced himself as a businessman, had invited her to his hotel room under the pretense of offering a job. However, once she arrived, he allegedly sexually assaulted her and later threatened her with serious consequences if she spoke out.

The accused is a resident of Bhawanipur, the same locality where the crime took place. The victim, who works at a bar-cum-restaurant in Kolkata, initially remained silent out of fear but later gathered the courage to approach the police. Based on her complaint, an FIR was registered, and the accused was swiftly arrested and presented in court, where he was remanded to police custody.
This incident comes at a time when West Bengal has been witnessing a series of disturbing sexual assault cases, including the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor inside R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital last month. Several other cases involving minors have also sparked outrage in recent months, raising concerns over women’s safety in the state.
