Sivaganga, Mar 8: The Narendra Modi-led Central government is ensuring access to quality medicines at affordable prices through the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), benefiting millions, especially the poor and middle-class families.

Jan Aushadhi Kendras in Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga district are witnessing high footfall, with 200 to 500 people visiting daily to purchase generic medicines at discounts ranging from 50% to 90% compared to private medical stores. These centres also offer home delivery services for the elderly and differently-abled.

Locals have expressed their appreciation for the initiative. Sushma from Kalayarkoil said she has been purchasing medicines for her father at much lower prices since the scheme's launch. Similarly, Madin from Indira Nagar praised the quality of medicines, while Sangeswari highlighted the affordability, stating that they cost half as much as those in private pharmacies.

A renowned chef from Kannur shared that he prefers buying medicines from Jan Aushadhi Kendras whenever he visits Tamil Nadu, given their affordability and quality. Shiva from Rose Nagar echoed similar sentiments, calling the scheme a boon for common people.

Rani, a Jan Aushadhi Kendra owner, confirmed that the initiative is helping thousands daily, adding that online medicine orders are also available for doorstep delivery.

Launched in 2008 by the department of pharmaceuticals under the ministry of chemicals and fertilisers, PMBJP ensures that generic medicines with the same therapeutic value as branded ones are available at reasonable rates, making healthcare more accessible across the country.
