Mangaluru, Sep 27: The department of linguistic studies in association with the literary club organised ‘Kavya Kammata’, Kannada poetry workshop on September 26. Padmashree awardee, Amai Mahalinga Naik was the chief guest for the programme. Dr Meenakshi, retired professor, Besant Women’s College, Dr Arun A Bhagwath, principal and dean, faculty of science, Dr Shareena P, vice principal and dean, faculty of commerce and management, Dr Jeevan Raj, vice principal, Shalini Sequeira, HOD, department of linguistic studies, Niyaz P, assistant professor and Dr Dinakara P were present on the dais.
The programme commenced with a prayer followed by the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. Niyaz P welcomed the gathering.
The chief guest Sri Mahalinga Naik, spoke about his background in Adyanadka village. With no formal education, he was awarded Padma Shri for single-handedly constructing about 300 percolation trenches in the hills surrounding the farm and when there was scarcity of water, he constructed a 12000-litre capacity tank in his village. He advised the students to be humble in life and conserve the natural resources available to us.
Principal Dr Arun A Bhagwath, in his message advised the students to work hard and have simplicity in life. He also told the students only a degree is not sufficient but humility is essential to achieve goals in life.
Dr Jeevan Raj, vice principal, on this occasion appreciated the efforts put by the chief guest and inspired the students to work hard in life.

The chief guest distributed prizes to the winners of elocution and singing competition.
The students beautifully presented a patriotic dance on this occasion.
Dr Meenakshi in her message gave the importance of poetry writing and guided the students to construct a poem. She also inspired the young minds by singing melodiously. Shalini Sequeira presented a memento to her.
Akshaya compered the programme. The programme concluded with the national anthem.
