Tagore's Notes to Echo in Restored 450-year-old Goa Chapel

Panaji, Jan 19 (IANS): Temple bells and compositions by India's legendary creative genius Rabindranath Tagore will echo within the walls of a beautifully restored 450-year-old chapel -- a Christian place of worship -- in Goa next month.

The Monte Hill Music Festival, organised annually by the Goa-based Portuguese cultural institute Fundacao Oriente and hosted within the restored precincts of the Our Lady of Mount, Old Goa, located 15 km from here, will also feature musicians and singers from Belgium, Portugal, Britain and several other parts of the country.

"It's a one of a kind festival. We will have a performance called 'Temple bells', a Bharatnatyam and Odissi tandem dance performance by Raul and Mitali D'Souza from Mumbai and a Belgian artiste playing some compositions of the great Rabindranath Tagore at the chapel," Eduardo Carvalho, delegate director of the Fundacao Oriente, told reporters Tuesday.

The Monte hill festival, which is being held in Goa for the ninth consecutive year, is known for the spectacular backdrop it offers to its guests, apart from the musical extravaganza.

The heritage chapel overlooks the winding Mandovi river and the performance timing coincides with a stunning view of the sunset across the river.

"Over the years, the Monte hill festival has become a much awaited event in Goa for music lovers," he said.

The festival this year will feature a Belgian violinist Hans Versmeersch, who will present works of Tagore, an 80-year old vocalist from the UKTony Gatward and a five member troupe from Portugal named Os Musicos do Tejo.

The Indian performers include the Bangalore-based school of music baroque ensemble, the Koranatus string quartet and the 32-member Mumbai-based Paranjoti Academy Chorus.

The festival will be held Feb 4-6.
