Mangalore, Jan 10: Consumer should be careful about dramatic weight variations, quality, price and brand of the product in order to avert any possible fraud, said deputy commissioner Subodh Yadav.
He was speaking after inaugurating the national consumer day celebration held under the joint auspices of district administration, food and civil supplies department Mangalore, district consumer federation and district consumer information centre at the Ganapathy High School Hall in the city on Monday January 10 at 10.00 am.
District Consumer Federation president M J Salian delivering his keynote address said that consumer act which came into existence in the year 1986 has managed the consumer to register complaints incase they are deceived by the supplier. Irrespective of the quantity of fraud caused to any consumer they can register a complaint through information center. Ordinary cases will take 90 days to be compensated while in case of any involvement of laboratory procedures will take 150 days of time, he added.
He also said as per the Consumer Protection Act 1984, every district should have Consumer Information Centre. Unfortunately, in Karnataka, there are only five Consumer Information Centres including that of Dakshina Kannada. The Federation has started Consumer Club in 54 schools and colleges in the district, he informed.
Zilla panchayat chied executive officer P Shivashankar presided. DDPI Chame Gowda Food and Civil Supplies Department deputy director Vrushabha Rajendra Moorthy and principal of GHS Shanthakumari Devi among others were present.
