Mangaluru, Dec 26: MLC Ivan D’Souza has emphasised that the construction of the flyover at Nanthoor should begin only after ensuring alternative arrangements for traffic movement. The tender process for the Rs 69 crore project has been completed, and only the order to commence work is pending.
In a press conference at the new MCC office, Ivan D'Souza stated that he has already spoken to NHAI officials about the matter. “The Rs 69 crore tender has been approved for the project. According to the tender, the work will take two years. Since Nanthoor Circle is a high-traffic area, alternative arrangements with concrete roads must be made to prevent public chaos. Otherwise, the situation will worsen. The DC should intervene and take appropriate action,” he said.
He further explained that the flyover is planned to span from Mallikatta Road to Bikkarnakatta Road, with vehicles on the national highway using an underpass. However, he criticised the local corporator for being unaware of how the work would proceed. “NHAI should organise a public grievance meeting to discuss the project,” he added.
Ivan D'Souza also shared details of issues raised by him during the 145th session of the Karnataka Legislative Council. “There is an opportunity to ask 45 questions in the session. I have raised several issues concerning the development of Dakshina Kannada district and received answers from the concerned authorities,” he said.
In the session, the minister informed that the Coastal Development Authority will be converted into the Coastal Region Development Board by May 2025, with an annual grant of Rs 250 crore for tourism-related works. “An assurance of a Rs 5 lac grant for every Kambala (traditional buffalo race) was also given. The minister agreed to allocate Rs 10 crore to clear the pending dues of retired lecturers at Mangaluru University. Additionally, Rs 400 crore will be provided for various works under the Paschima Vahini project,” Ivan said.
Ivan D'Souza also announced that four government buses are now running on the Mangaluru-Moodbidri-Karkala route, with approval for four more buses on a temporary basis. “This initiative aims to strengthen the Shakti guarantee bus scheme in the district,” he added.
