Doha : Calangute A Wins Inter-village Football Tourney

Doha, Oct 19: Calangute A won the 7–a-side Inter-Village football tournament organized by Doha Goans Sports Club (DGSC) held at Al Ahli Stadium on Friday defeating Raia 1-0 in the final. 

The goal came in the second half. A throw-in by Santan saw Casmiro executing a perfect and accurate header which shocked the Raia's goalkeeper and gave Calangute a 1-0 lead. Thereafter, Raia missed two golden opportunities to score in the last two minutes of the game, which were foiled by the superb Calangute keeper.
Santan, Ex-Dempo Sports Club and  Sesa Goa Football Club player who played a stellar role for the winners was adjusted the best player of final and also the highest scorer of the tournament.

Ten teams took part in the tournament. They were Benaulim, Korlim, Calangute A, Calangute B, Raia, Curtorim, Rest of Villages, St,Andre, Aldona and Maina.









Earlier, Calangute A defeated Benaulim in the first semi-final and in the second semi-final Raia defeated St Andre.
Many other prizes were given away.  Best Goalkeeper - Mathew of Calangute A, Best Defender - Franky of Raia, Promising Player of the tournament - Terrence of Benaulim, Outstanding Player of the tournament - Caji of Curtorim, Most Discipline team of the tournament - Rest of villages.

Dominic team manager of Benaulim was awarded the best team manager by the organizers for showing his sportsmanship spirit. Paul Fernandes was also adjudged the best team manager of the tournament. All the participating teams were given a special gift for their support towards the tournament. There was also a lucky entrance prize for this tournament.

The chief guest for the tournament Melwyn Barretto gave away the winners Trophy. Deniz D’souza gave away the winner’s individual trophies. Alex Soares gave away the runners-up trophy and Avito Carvalho gave away the individual runners-up trophies. Antonio Macaranhas gave away the trophy for the two managers who showed their sporting sprit. Natcey Barretto gave away the best outstanding player
trophy. Mathew Estrocio (Advisor) and Mario Periera (Sports Advisor) gave the vote of thanks.

Mario D'Costa compered the day long tournament and the tournament was officiated by a Qatar Football Federation referee.

The tournament saw a large turnout of the Goans community, with the tournament providing entertainment for the entire family members who came in large numbers to watch, support and cheer their village footballers. The tournament was supported by many community members and business establishments in Qatar. Doha Goans Sports Club take the opportunity to thank all the sponsors, supporters and well wishers for their contribution towards the success of this tournament. Cameron Fernandes also supported this event and Melwyn Barretto sponsored the winners and runners-up cup.

The event was organized by the sports director Collin Fernandes and his team consisting of Diogo Rodrigues,  Reggie Vaz, Mario Periera, Richard Fernandes , Fidelise Miranda. Mathew Estrocio and Anthonio Vaz gave their full support on the field.

Collin Fernandes has promise to organized many more sports events for the Goans community in the future. There will be a football tournament for the Under-15 boys and under-19 boys in the month of November.
