Karkala, Oct 7: “Internationally-acclaimed ornithologist S A Hussain was a university”, said Dr Arunachalam, dean of K S Hegde Medical Institute, Mangalore.
He was speaking after accepting the first S A Hussain Memorial Award during a function held at Bhuvanendra College here on Tuesday October 5.
“It will be a fitting tribute to the late S A Hussain if a lake is identified in the taluk and developed as a bird sanctuary”, urged Dr Arunachalam.
“S A Hussain had given a new perspective to environmental issues with his distinct thoughts”, revealed Dr Arunachalam speaking from his decade-long association with Hussain.
He also released the book ‘Memories of Hussain’ on the same occasion.
In hispresidential address, Bhuvanendra College principal Prof B Padmanabha Gowda said that the late Hussain was a humanitarian and set an example for students to think beyond their studies and
explore their inner self.
K Prabhakar Acharya explained the achievements of Hussain and the objectives of the trust. He also expressed hope of financial support from S A Hussain’s friends in promoting environmental issues that
were dear to the late ornithologist.
S A Hussain’s nephew Siraj Hussain was the chief guest on the occasion. Siraj said that he was proud of his uncle’s significant contributions to the eco-environment.
Prizes were distributed to winners of various competitions held as part of the programme.
S A Hussain was a regular visitor to Bhuvanendra College during his lifetime. He instilled in the students a love for the eco-environment over many years.
Bhuvanendra College managing committee director Rajgopal Acharya, Eshwar Bhat, Shivashanker, Sandhyadevi, and Soumya and others assisted in the programme.
