Udupi: Car falls into excavation pit at Ambalpady overpass construction site

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (TP)

Udupi, Dec 27: A car travelling from Mangaluru towards Kundapur veered off the road and plunged into a large excavation pit dug for an overpass pillar foundation at Ambalpady junction.

The car reportedly lost control while trying to make way for another vehicle and fell into the pit.

Fortunately, all four passengers escaped without injuries.

The overpass construction at Ambalpady junction, aimed at reducing traffic congestion, has raised safety concerns due to inadequate barricades and warning signs at the site, which are believed to have contributed to the accident.

The excavation is not as per industry safety practices, notice that there is no slope on the excavated walls , its a straight deep excavation without any step cuts or slope. This is generally considered unsafe in the civil construction field.

Why don't the contractor place concrete barriers specially near deep excavation as safety barriers? Many more such accidents may occur if proper safety precautions not implemented.

Traffic management in Udupi and Manipal are literally non existent, except in just a few places. There are hoards of tippers running amock, most of them driven by drunk drivers. Recently a tipper driver fled the scene after killing two people on alevoor road. While investigating it was found the driver was drunk and no documents were found in the tipper. Still after a day of the incident the tippers haven't learnt much and drive like yamadoots. Here the traffic police dont even have regular checking for rash driving, one way driving, drunk driving etc etc. No control on over speeding autos or a lot of bikes without number plates at the back. In Udupi and Manipal one can go around entire city and hardly find about 10 police managing traffic. And most of the 10 are busy on thier mobile phones watching reels. Very unfortunate and this unfortunately the SP and DC here haven't noticed. I dont know how many more deaths it will take for the people responsible to wake up.

This is a attempt to murder case by the NHAI authorities. Can't some lawyers file a case and take them to court so that these incidents will not happen again?. In nanthoor I am seeing similar larger excavations done and they are no barricades and people have no footpaths to walk.Bikes ar going on the side of the road at full speeds and Im certain some fatal accidents are sure to happen here.

This job is even more nightmarish than santhekatte underpass work site... Probably they could have diverted light vehicles into bannanje nairkere road to service road before Gopura junction... Also due to over traffic bottlenecks drivers try ways to overcome and thereby fall into excavations like this... we will have to see these kind of things for a year or more ...
