Sharjah, Jul 25 (The National): Electricity chiefs apologised to the residents of Sharjah yesterday, at the end of a week in which a series of daily power cuts brought daily life and business in the emirate to a standstill.
The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) said it would commit all its resources to providing better service for customers.
Sewa said the power cuts were caused by a “sudden glitch” in a natural gas pipeline that feeds its main power station. The statement said the power had to be cut for several hours in some districts to deal with the emergency.
It said it would strive to prevent any reoccurrence of the glitch and asked consumers to monitor power consumption to avert unnecessary strain on the grid.
During three days of power cuts last week hospitals reported treating four times the usual number of cases of heat exhaustion, and businesses complained about loss of trade.
