With this in mind, the second edition of St Aloysius Pre University Model United Nations (SAPMUN) powered by DSA Labs, took off with an inaugural ceremony on October 16 at 4.30 pm.
Model United Nations is a three-day conference where students role-play diplomats and ambassadors of various countries. It is an educational simulation that helps students in their debating and diplomacy skills. SAPMUN is one such conference hosted by St Aloysius Pre-University College.
SAPMUN 2020 was inaugurated in the presence of the chief guest, Subramaniyan Ganesh, IRS, deputy director of Income Tax, Mangaluru. Subramaniyan G asked the delegates to overcome challenges like fear and ignorance with faith and knowledge just as light prevails over darkness. He expressed his happiness on the students organizing and participating in such relevant events which will help them in developing their interpersonal skills, and become more confident in facing the real world. He also lauded the efforts of the institution in providing such platforms for the overall growth of the youth.
Presiding over the function was the rector of St Aloysius Institutions, Fr Melwin Pinto SJ. In his presidential address he spoke about how every citizen must think about the well being of everyone and that the youth can help find solutions to global problems like discrimination, conflict and war.
The principal of St Aloysius PUC, Fr Clifford Sequeira SJ, welcomed all the delegates to SAPMUN 2020. He spoke about how it is imperative that youngsters be informed about global issues despite the insecurities caused by the pandemic COVID-19. He said that young people can bring in change through platforms like MUN in all of these issues.
SAPMUN 2020 has ventured onto the online platform for the very first time. Having taken this step not only to stay connected but also to discuss world problems the delegates will deliberate in committees like the Lok Sabha, United Nations General Assembly, United Nations Human Rights Council, United Nations Women and Disarmament and International Security over the next two days. The deliberations aim to find innovative solutions to problems faced in different places all over the world.
The secretariat members present were the secretary-general, Azaan Ibrahim, the director-general, Naufil Kalam, the president, Jeseem Siraj and the vice-president, Mohammed Shamil Shukoor. Azaan Ibrahim addressed the delegates and declared SAPMUN open. Jeseem Siraj introduced and florally welcomed the chief guest. Blanche Rodrigues, the secretary of the students' council, welcomed the dignitaries and Mohammed Shamil Shukoor proposed the vote of thanks. Vandana Bhaskar, the president of the students' council 2020 compered the programme.
The inaugural ceremony was witnessed by the staff and students of St Aloysius PU College through the online platform's zoom meetings and YouTubelive.
