New Delhi, Apr 22: Emphasising the critical importance of fire prevention in healthcare settings, the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of patients, attendants, and staff across the country's medical facilities.

Speaking at the launch of ‘Fire Safety Week’ (April 21–25), Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava stressed the urgent need for robust fire and electrical safety measures in both public and private hospitals. “We must foster a culture of safety and preparedness within healthcare institutions, including regular mock drills and capacity-building exercises,” she said at the pledge-taking ceremony.

The Ministry has partnered with all states, Union Territories, and relevant central departments to observe the week-long campaign aimed at enhancing awareness and prevention of fire hazards in healthcare facilities.

Srivastava called on all stakeholders including private hospitals and organizations like the Indian Medical Association to actively participate and share best practices with the Ministry.

Participants pledged to uphold the highest standards of fire safety, conduct training on fire prevention and emergency protocols, and explore innovative approaches to reduce fire risks in healthcare settings.

As part of the campaign, a two-day national webinar series was organised, drawing over 3,000 participants from across India. The sessions covered topics such as fire detection systems, evacuation procedures, regulatory compliance, and system maintenance.

The Ministry emphasised that both public and private sectors must work together to safeguard lives and ensure hospitals are fully prepared for fire-related emergencies.
