Mangaluru, Aug 7: The underpass for pedestrians which is being built under smart city project opposite town hall is being executed at a faster pace now. As per the current estimate, the underpass might be opened for public use by October this year.
As the area near the town hall is located in the heart of the city, hundreds of vehicles use this road. Therefore, people, particularly the aged ones, were finding it hard to cross over to the other side of the road. This project was drawn to help them to reach the other side of the road. The underpass is 365 metres long and 11.5 metres wide. People who want to go to central railway station, mini Vidhana Soudha, tahsildar's office, Lady Goschen, Market etc will be benefitted by the underpass.
Managing director of Mangaluru Smart City Ltd, Muhammed Nazeer, said that the smart underpass work backed by smart road concept which also involves beautification of Gandhi Park opposite the town hall got delayed by about two months on account of rainy season. He said he expects the underpass to be ready by September end and the people will be able to use it from October.
Currently, work is going on by restricting office on the road opposite mini Vidhana Soudha. Preparations are now on to lay concrete slabs. Once the slabs are completed, steps will be built for the pedestrians on both the sides.
