Udupi: Recovered mental health patient reunited with family in Kolkata

Media Release

Udupi, Dec 27: Social worker Vishu Shetty successfully reunited a recovered mental health patient with his family in Kolkata on December 26, showcasing an inspiring act of compassion and community support.

The patient, Satinder Singh, who had earlier caused panic near Kalpana Talkies in Udupi by attacking passers-by, was rescued by Vishu Shetty with the help of the public. Singh was admitted to Baliga Hospital for treatment. After his recovery, he was safely sent back to his hometown.

Singh, who had come to Udupi for work, developed mental health issues leading to distressing and erratic behaviour. Locals filed complaints with the police, prompting Shetty’s intervention. During the rescue, Singh displayed alarming behaviour, including attempts to swallow an iron object and threatening self-harm.

Once stabilized, Singh provided the hospital with his family's contact details and expressed his wish to return home. His wife, unable to travel to Udupi due to childcare responsibilities, requested that Singh be sent home via train.

Vishu Shetty personally escorted Singh to Mangaluru railway station, providing him with a train ticket and Rs 7,500 in cash to cover his travel expenses. The hospital treatment cost Rs 9,600, which was partially supported by donor Girish, contributing Rs 7,000. Shetty covered the remainder himself.

Shetty’s noble efforts, assisted by social activist Harish Udyavar, have been widely lauded as an exemplary act of humanity.
