Bengaluru, Jul 10: Record number of suicide cases have been reported in the state after the lockdown was announced to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

Many people have committed suicide due to the social stigma, fear, anxiety and depression which they developed in their mind due to the pandemic. In the month of May, over 1,127 people that is 23% and in June, around 1,084 people which is 18% have killed themselves. Meanwhile, the number of suicide cases in April, reported were just 477.

Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, regional director of WHO said, "COVID-19 infection pushes many people to develop loneliness and depression in mind. Another reason for the suicides during COVID-19 is the harassment that the individuals face at home. That is why the suicide rate has increased at the global level."

"COVID-19 has been dreadful for both life and living with it has made the present psychological problems aggravate further," opined Khetarpal Singh.

Psychological problems have to be identified in the beginning stages in order to cure them effectively. According to the statistics around 8 lac people commit suicide worldwide every year. The age group which mostly commits suicide is that of youths between the ages of 15 to 29 years.
