Bantwal, Jul 10: In an incident which happened late night on Thursday July 9, Bantwal town station assistant sub-inspector (ASI), Shylesh T and three other policemen came under attack with iron rod at Melkar in the taluk. Relating to the incident, a case under sections 353, 504, 506, 332, 307 and 427 of Indian Penal Code stands registered in the town police station here. Sections of the Karnataka Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act have also been invoked against the accused.
During the scuffle that ensured when the people tried to catch hold of the accused, he attacked them too. The accused, identified as Abdul Salam (28) from Golthamajalu village was injured in the incident. He is being treated at a private hospital at Mangaluru, the police said.
On getting information that lorry drivers and people were involved in a friction at Melkar, Bantwal town station ASI, Shylesh T, along with constables went to the spot in a police vehicle. It is said that when the police went to Abdul Salam, who was creating a fuss and was wielding a lethal iron rod in his hand, he obstructed the policemen from discharging their duties, used abusive words against them, and threatened to kill them. He then attacked the police with his iron rod. He hit the police vehicle with his rod and kicked it besides hitting with his bare hands and inflicted damages to the vehicle.
The people who gathered there tried to stop his unruly behaviour by catching hold of him when he too suffered injuries. Shylesh T and three other policemen who were attacked, were treated at the government hospital here. The accused is currently being treated at a private hospital at Mangaluru.
