Dharwad: Muslim family performs tonsure ceremony, a Hindu custom at mosque

Daijiworld Media Network - Dharwad (SP)

Dharwad, Jun 26: Many Hindus follow 'mundan' or tonsure ceremony, the custom of offering the first hair of the child to a temple or deity of their choice. For this purpose, they leave the hair untouched by blade till the child grows up and they are able to visit the religious centre where the head is tonsured and hair is offered to the deity.

This procedure is done normally in the presence of the child's parents and maternal uncle. The Hindus believe that this act pleases the gods and the act results in divine blessings for the child.

Muslims do not follow this custom. Still, a Muslim family offered the hair of a child at a mosque at Chikkaparthi in Kundagol taluk in this district.

Lalasab Nadaf and Ameena Nadaf couple from Chikkaparthi village followed the above custom. They performed the programme of removing hair of their six-month-old child Arif, at the local mosque. The programme, which demonstrated Hindu-Muslim unity, was held in the presence of elders and priests.

Nadaf couple is desirous of teaching the lesson of harmonious coexistence to children since a very young age. In rural places, people work together and they do not confine themselves to a specific belief. The couple followed this custom to show that one need not be confined to the customs of a single religion, and everyone should respect the customs of one another.

I really don't understand the relation of 'Hindu-Muslim' unity with tonsuring of head in Mosque by Muslim new born couple.

The shaving the Newborn's Head is Sunna(Prophet Mohammed) teaching on the seventh day from his birth and called 'AQEEQAH' in India.Yes, it is recommended that one shave the head of the newborn and give an amount in charity approximately equal to the weight of that hair shaved in gold and silver. Though this is not obligatory it is still recommended, irregardless of whether the newborn is a boy or a girl.

According to Islamic practice the benefit of shaving the newborn's hair: Shaving his head removes the harm from him, removes the weak hair so that stronger and firmer hair replaces it and it is beneficial for the head. In addition, it comforts the newborn and opens the head's skin openings... And along with this is a strengthening of his eye sight, his sense of smell and hearing.

This custom is very common among major religions across the world and done according to their own faith.

Na Tasya Pratima Asti! He is formless, there is no likeliness to him. I am God, everything around me is God. Similar to fasting where we demonstrate we are not attached to food & can skip food for God, tonsuring head is an individual act of giving up attachment to prove love for God above attachments perceived precious to us. Few saints if high order also give up wearing any clothes or speaking for lifetime. It has nothing to do with one's religion.

They can really contribute to communal harmony if can prevail upon some of their misguided fellow community men to stop cattle theft. Just clean shaving the head doesn't mean anything.

What do you know about 'Mundan '.. You tell me? Which ceremonies do you believe in then?
It's only when you know both sides to a story should one give his observations repeat observations. You are nobody to jump into conclusions about a ' religious traditional ritual ' which has its own significance in the lives of millions of Hindus world over...

I really fail to understand what is the religious harmony had been demonstrated by tonsuring the head of a muslim kid in a mosque. Many of the Hindu traditions, rituals are being practised by other religion practitioner due to their ignorance of their own faith. Most of the christian churches in kerala have Dhwaja stambha, Oil Lamps , Bells , Kalasha Kumbha and many others symbols such Hindu Temple. I have even attended a christian marriage in Kerala where bride was smeared with Sindoor by groom. Wearing a muslim cap by hindu or christian is not religious harmony, We must understand that, all these religious faith was established many centuries ago and eventually influenced by the other faiths rituals and traditions. May be after some centuries Muslims and christians will adopt most of the hindu tradition and culture and will become sub cast of Hinduism. This is really happened to Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism Lingayats, etc , many of these faiths established mostly opposing the belief and rituals of the hinduism and eventually start adopting hindu culture and now seen as the sub cast of broader Hinduism. One must stand in his own beliefs and traditions and must respect the other faith is the appropriate religious harmony ,not practicing other faiths rituals and tradition.

    Sunny,

If everyone had followed Indian cultural System as said by you, then all would have been Hindus in this Jambu Dweepa even after the exit of Moghuls,British etc. Nowadays whether one is affluent or poor, literate or illiterate, some people do it to please someone.

But the only thing which I understand is, the MEMORY fom previous births carried by these people whether their present parents were even non Hindus and still wish to do some practices done by Hindus.

Sunny, I completely agree with you. Vinay Nair failed to understand the difference between religious customs and Indian cultural customs as you said.
Bell and tower is part of Christian culture as well. Buddism and Jainism is very close to Hinduism and one might feel that they are a sub caste.
A Jain is the past president of BJP, who is talking about Hinduism. That does not mean those religions will become a part of Hinduism,
Mangla-sutra (Kariymani) is part of Hindu/Indian culture as well as Sindoor.
If Christians do wear Kariyamai and place Sindoor on their head, it does not mean that they are following Hindu culture but being in India , they follow Indian custom. Sindoor does not have the religious importance for them but Indian custom.
Vinay, this is called living in co-existence. Not being blind by one religion but adjusting to your surroundings. Muslims do not live in India like they live in Saudi Arabia or Iran. Hindus do not live in majority of the western countries like India, even some have a name that suits locals. Are you trying to tell, each religion should have a dress code as well? Where is that dress coming from, it is local tradition. Naturally, in India Christian/Muslim/Buddhist women wear saree because it is Indian culture rather Hindu culture.

Dear Ashwin, Glad to know u agreed .....im sure there are lots more..but they are not in a position to openly say or write so... mayb busy...no time to write...just read and go on with life. thats ok too
.Im 60+ yrs old now... when i was in my teens my father and his close friend ( sorry to add this ,I shouldn't have.... but in this this context I've to say that he was my Dads closest Hindu friend) I remember they both telling me that there is a difference in Hindu Religion practice and Indian Culture... Remember there were Muslims , Christians and Hindus who ruled India.....
Wearing of Nose ring, Ear ring, applying bindi on forehead as far as i know till now is Indian Culture and I'm proud of it...,,Its the same when we light fire to the deepa...im sure lots of my brothers and sisters from other religion must have noticed that its common in India.... May be our new young brothers are not aware of all this...
Lets be fair..... we have our neighbors / friends /very very close friends from different religions....am I right ?... we do not show disparity to them ( whatever religion we are from) ... so ....why the heck.. should we bark out venom in this forum instead of trying to bring harmony here?...INDIA WILL BE RAISED ONLY IF WE ALL RAISE INDIA... its not any politicians...or any party...they want us to fight each other
( I've Hindu Brothers, Christian Brother, Muslim brothers who wud give their life for me ...and in return i wud too....its that simple )...all who agree to this giv a shout out...lets show we who are

Anna prashana, Kesha Mundana, Karna Vendana( Fist time Feeding, Tonsuring, ear piercing with religious method) are common among sixteen sacraments (Shodash Samkara) rituals to be done to induce a child to Hindu religion. How you can you differential Hindu culture and Indian culture? Jews and christian culture from Israel and Muslim culture from Arab? A religion is the part of the culture of the same land where it has germinated. With due respect to the culture of all religion, I don't understand why some one need to follow some others cultural aspects?

Shaving the head is done in many religions. These acts are symbolizing the total surrender to God. Among Christians, Capuchin priests and some nuns do this. Among Muslims, during major pilgrimage Hajj, minor pilgrimage Umra, 7th day child and conversion to Islam, shaving of head can be done. About Hindus, there may are many occasions. Some nuns in Jain and Christian religions do tonsure, to curtail to the world their beauty and femininity, as a total sacrifice.

Other than this, some people shave their heads, when there are lice. Sometimes it is done to insult a person as a punishment. Some countries, while freeing a person from jail, do this. Some people, when the heat of the sun is scorching, also do this.
