Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, May 31: Noted social worker and former principal of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Dr Olinda Pereira passed away on Sunday May 31. She was 95.

Born on August 15, 1925, Dr Olinda Pereira contributed immensely in the field of education and social service, especially in helping senior citizens and elderly care.

A pioneering educationist, she worked for the promotion of women's education and empowerment in various parts of the country.

Third of three children to Martin and Lily, Dr Pereira pursued her education up to BA at St Agnes College, followed by B Ed from St Ann’s. She taught in St Mary’s High School at Marjil for 12 years while pursuing concurrently an external course leading to MA in psychology from Banaras Hindu University. She followed it up with a doctorate from Mysore University.

She was part of the founding team of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya and served as its principal from 1961 to 1982. On retirement, she went to Delhi to start the Institute for Working Women’s Hostel and Women’s Development Centre, staying there from 1984 to 1991. This was followed by a transfer to Nairobi where she set up a new Provincial House.

After returning to Mangaluru, she founded Vishwas Trust in 1999, an organisation promoting house-based care of the elderly, besides providing a day-care centre for the elderly.

She served as the president of National Committee on Women. Her publications included 'Understanding Children', 'Adjustment and its Correlation among Pre Adolescents' and 'Domestic Workers' Struggle'. She started city community development centre, family welfare organisation, kindergarten at Ullal and many other organisations in Mangaluru.

She was the recipient of several awards, including Mahatma Gandhi Peace Award from McMaster University, Hamilton in 1979, Women Achiever Award from St Agnes College in 1997, Sandesha Award for Social Service in 2002; Rachana Woman of the Year in 2008, Veera Rani Abbakka Award (for Social Service) and Karavali Honarary Award 2015-16.

    RIP mam
    This degree is original one
In olden days it was not so easy to obtain degrees or diplomas
    But now it is easy
People can get MA degree without BA
And after getting degree no record in any university
    Classmates name also not remembered
    It happens in India alone

Although my heart is heavy with grief at the passing of our beloved Ma'am, I am grateful for the gift of her life to our community.
I am indebted to a great soul, who lived larger than life, made a huge difference in this community and made the world a better place by being in it. Dr. Ms Pereira was a humanitarian icon with extrodinary gifts and a unifying force to reckon with.
A compassionate heart - whose heart was all kindness and kindness was all heart! She led by example, to respect, accept people unconditionally, irrespective of thier beliefs, human differences and limitations. Her ability to put people at ease and make them feel that they mattered was the hallmark of her greatness.
I was fortunate to be mentored by her in my job and be influenced by her exceptional virtues. She exhorted us to be better version of ourselves. What a legacy our Dr. Ms Olinda leaves behind. She lived to love and to give! An epitome of grace and humility!
Your light shines brightly Ms. Pereira as you walk into the arms of our Lord! Thank you!
My heartfelt condolences to Berne, Germaine and families.

Mangalore has lost a great "Community Stalwart" of our time. Dr. Olinda was known to us for a long time. She was truly a Community Activist, always wanted to do something for Mangalore. One of her deep desire was to create a Senior Citizen Home for the elderly. She had "big" plans for the aging society of Mangalore, and she already created blue prints for the project to go forward. We suggested to Dr. Olinda Pereira that the time is not appropriate for her to be burdened with this project, and instead she should take care of herself.

Dr. Olinda Pereira lived a good life, dedicating herself towards the cause of many others. She was very proud of Roshni Nilaya. She was active throughout her life.

May Dr. Olinda rest in peace, while Mangalore has lost a good leader.

A great personality. Pioneer in many fields- Education, social work, women's empowerment and care of the elderly. An inspiration for people of many generations....ashe was at ease with both building individuals and Institutions.
A great fighter..,.. fighting all the way......till 95 years... She had to fight with everyone and everything!!!
We will do atleast a small part of what you did.... That is the way to pay her back for what she did to so many of us .. poor , rural students who joined Roshni Nilaya..even today we see a total transformation of students who join Roshni. That credit definetly goes to Ms. Pereira....you will always be remembered by us........as a great soul who changed our life and personality.

The passing away of Olinda Pereira who was an institution by herself has saddened all of us. My memory goes back to the year 1958 when I came in contact with her along with Late Fr Agneletto SJ. We can never forget her outstanding services rendered to the ecumenical movement in and around Mangalore and all over Karnataka state. Several seminars talks and workshops were organized by her. Her simple and unassuming soul will ever be remembered.

Heartfelt condolences to the institute of social work Roshni Nilaya and bereaved members of the family. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
