Kaup: Youngster dies after being struck by lightning at Katapady

Kaup, May 17: In a tragic incident, a youngster lost his life after being struck by lightning at Katapady here late evening on Sunday May 17.

The deceased has been identified as Bharath (22), a resident of Katapady.

Heavy rains accompanied by thunder and lightning lashed several parts of the coastal region on Sunday evening, including Katapady. It is learnt that though Bharat was inside the house, he was fatally struck by the lightning.

Bharath was a student. He was also an active volunteer of Katapady Vishwanath Kshetra and was among the youngest volunteers to participate in 'Anna Santarpane' and other activities.

    Very sad.so young and he was in house.I can only guess what must have happened.Many times people forget to switch off their mobile during the thunder and lightening times.Probably he must have had his mobile on and in pocket or nearby.People please note onething.please dont carry your mobile in your pockets during lightening.please switch off.second thing dont stay in water ,for example in bathroom taking shower during this time.very very dangerous ,that too barefeet.sit on a bed or wooden or plastic stool.many times lightening strikes elektric meter in homes.and that time when someone nearby is barefoot,might get the shock too.heartfelt sympathy to the family.may his soul rest in peace.

    During my childhood days lightning was more powerful than this.
    People were not dying.
    There were lot of trees around the house.for example jackfruit trees Mango trees tamarind trees coconut trees or any other trees very good conductors for lightning
    Electric current produced by lighting is because of bombardment of clouds.and this electricity is of thousands of volts.
    Imagine at house we cannot tolerate 240 volts if we are electrocuted.
    Then what about thousand volts
    For this government should install lightning conductor pillars everywhere.
    That's the only solution

    Really sad to hear the news. He is very young. Mescom should make Lightening Arrestor a compulsory for every house or at least create awareness about the same. RIP brother.

    Precious life is lost even during "stay at home". This could have been saved if the house had a lightning arrestor.
    If the house had tall trees or structures near by ,it is safe on lightning point of view as it will hit the trees.
    The houses / buildings which are away from tall trees should have a lightning arrestor pole connected to an earth pit for lightning protection. The Electricity board should create awareness and make it mandatory for all. People realise only after the tragedy strikes.
